2026 Will Confirm a Dying Movie Genre Has Been Saved From Extinction (& 2027 Makes It Even Better)

Around ten years ago, traditional studio comedies started disappearing from theaters. As society became more focused on political correctness, major studios began to view these modestly-budgeted films as too risky and likely to cause controversy. Despite the saying that any publicity is good publicity, this didn’t seem to hold true for movies where millions were invested in both production and marketing. As a result, and with fewer mainstream comedies being made, parody films quickly became outdated and rare.

Last year, The Naked Gun surprised a lot of people by being both a critical and commercial success. Its continued popularity in theaters created an opportunity, and now spoof movies are making a comeback, with sequels to two other well-known classics already in the works.

How Will Scary Movie and Spaceballs 2 Do?

The latest Scream film had a strong opening weekend, but the trailer for Michael Tiddes’ Scary Movie—which reunites the Wayans brothers with the franchise after 25 years—also generated significant buzz. While Scream 7 made headlines, the trailer’s clever jokes and use of Eminem’s “Without Me” captured attention. The song’s lyrics, particularly “’Cause it feels so empty without me,” seemed perfectly suited to the current moment and the film’s revival.

The new Scary Movie is predicted to be just as popular as the latest Scream film, and might even surpass it in box office earnings. While fans have seen three Scream movies since 2022, the last Scary Movie was released in 2013 – though many would argue the poorly-received Scary Movie V doesn’t really count. Essentially, it’s been 17 years since a truly well-regarded Scary Movie came out. For devoted fans who believe the Wayans family films defined the franchise, it’s been even longer – since Scary Movie 2.

Let’s look at the success of the first Scream and Scary Movie. Scream was a major hit, made on a $14 million budget, and earned over $100 million in the US thanks to strong word-of-mouth and continued popularity. Three years later, Scary Movie, which was a parody of films like Scream, Scream 2, and I Know What You Did Last Summer, opened with a huge $42.3 million weekend. It continued to perform well, ultimately earning $157 million domestically and $121 million internationally – a massive amount for a comedy.

There’s good reason to expect this new installment will be just as successful as previous ones. This franchise has a knack for appearing at the perfect moment, and now is the ideal time to take advantage of the current trend of ‘rebootquels’ – reboots that also function as sequels. The original Scary Movie remains popular, and its bold humor, which was daring in 2000, feels even more so today. That willingness to take risks is a welcome change from the more cautious approach many studios take now. Fans are hoping this new film will be equally bold and intentionally provocative, and many viewers are craving that kind of entertainment. While The Naked Gun paved the way, Scary Movie is likely to take things to the extreme.

I’m really excited about Spaceballs 2 coming out in 2027! We don’t know a ton about it yet, since it’s still a ways off, but I have a good feeling it’s going to be really popular. Maybe not Scary Movie levels of huge, but definitely a big hit!

Just like the first Scary Movie, the original Spaceballs still has a dedicated fanbase years later. It’s among Mel Brooks’ most popular films, alongside classics like Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. The return of Brooks, Bill Pullman, George Wyner, and Daphne Zuniga will definitely draw fans to the theater. Plus, this is Rick Moranis’ first film in three decades, which adds to the excitement. Like the late Catherine O’Hara, Moranis has fans across multiple generations, thanks to his charming personality and memorable roles in films like Ghostbusters and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.

Despite a few missteps, Disney’s run with Star Wars has included significant successes, such as the series Andor. Regardless, Disney has kept Star Wars firmly embedded in popular culture. With Star Wars entering a new decade-long era, satirizing it feels as relevant and current as poking fun at the endless stream of horror reboots.
