Disney Quietly Cancels Another Live-Action Remake

Disney has been making live-action versions of its classic animated films for the past twenty years. We’ve seen direct remakes like The Lion King and The Jungle Book, and also new stories based on those worlds, such as Cruella and Maleficent. But one remake that won’t be happening is a live-action version of the 1973 animated film Robin Hood. Surprisingly, this project was considered one of the most straightforward, as Robin Hood has been adapted into live-action films several times before.

Director Carlos López Estrada recently shared on Reddit that Disney has cancelled his planned live-action remake of Robin Hood. He explained, “It’s dead, sadly,” adding that he believed the project had a lot of potential and featured some truly exceptional music.

Disney’s Robin Hood Remake Could Have Been Incredible

It’s disappointing because this movie could have been great. Director Carlos López Estrada, known for Raya and the Last Dragon, had a really promising vision for a new take on Robin Hood. The script was by Kari Granlund, who worked on Lady and the Tramp, and the plan was to combine live action with animation in a musical format. Considering the original animated film’s fantastic and award-winning soundtrack – it was nominated for both an Oscar and a Grammy – there was a lot of potential.

Okay, so everyone jokes about Disney constantly remaking its animated classics in live-action, but honestly, it’s been a pretty smart move for them. A lot of these remakes actually make a ton of money. We’re talking four films – Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Alice in Wonderland, and even Lilo & Stitch – all surpassing a billion dollars at the global box office! And another four pulled in over half a billion. It really makes you wonder why they haven’t revisited a film like Robin Hood – the potential was definitely there.

The main reason a new Robin Hood movie deserved to be made was the director’s vision for a unique film combining live-action and animation with memorable musical numbers – the original Robin Hood already featured catchy songs by Roger Miller like “Oo-De-Lally.” While many Robin Hood adaptations exist, a live-action/animation hybrid featuring Robin Hood as a clever red fox and Little John as a talking bear had the potential to be as entertaining as the successful remake of The Jungle Book, which remains a standout among Disney’s live-action films.

Disney’s live-action Moana is coming to theaters this summer and is predicted to be very successful, largely thanks to Dwayne Johnson returning as Maui. While Lilo & Stitch was a huge hit last year and matched the quality of the original animated film, it’s surprising Disney didn’t choose to remake Robin Hood – it could have been one of their most compelling live-action adaptations.
