Many classic anime series are perfect for families to enjoy together, making Saturday mornings a great time to watch them. Things were different when we were kids – waking up early on Saturdays meant tuning into dedicated blocks of cartoons like Fox Kids and Kids WB! These blocks weren’t just filled with traditional cartoons; they also cleverly included a lot of anime that blended right in, offering a surprising and fun mix for viewers.
7). Yu-Gi-Oh! (Tubi, Pluto TV, Netflix, Crunchyroll)

Many of the anime shows that aired on Saturday mornings on channels like Fox Kids and Kids WB were essentially commercials for toys or games, just like other cartoons at the time. This led to a lot of series focused on collecting things, such as Pokemon (which we’ll discuss later). Yu-Gi-Oh! stands out as a prime example. While it might be the most mature show on this list due to the nature of its battles, those battles are all fought using card games.
The action isn’t very strong or violent, but some scenes are a little spooky. It’s best for older kids, as it was a show similar to TV-Y7 that used to air later on Kids WB. This timing was good because younger kids were starting to get antsy later in the day, while older kids were just waking up.

6). Spider Riders (Tubi)
Many millennials might have forgotten about Spider Riders. Unlike most anime, it wasn’t based on a manga, but instead adapted from a series of novels by Tedd Anasti, Patsy Cameron-Anasti, and Stephen D. Sullivan. Animated by P.A. Works, the story centers on a boy who discovers a hidden world deep underground, populated by insect-like creatures locked in a struggle for survival.
This new fantasy adventure follows a boy who rides a spider into battle, and he’s fighting in a war with huge consequences. While it’s an action-packed show, it’s geared towards younger viewers and keeps the intensity lighter than some other fantasy series, making it a fun, less overwhelming experience.

5). Monster Rancher (Tubi, Pluto TV, Prime Video)
Let’s add Monster Rancher to the list of enjoyable but overlooked shows. Based on Tecmo’s video game series – a response to the Pokémon phenomenon with its own unique monsters – the games cleverly used CDs players owned to enhance the experience. The anime series then took this concept even further, transporting a Monster Rancher player into a completely new world.
This series doesn’t have monsters as instantly recognizable as those in Pokémon, but it tells a surprisingly epic story. It follows a team-up between a young girl and a quest to find a legendary Phoenix, offering a magical world filled with exciting creatures and adventures in each episode.

4). Sonic X (Netflix, Hulu, Tubi, Pluto TV)
Sonic has long been a popular character for families, and the Sonic X anime continues that tradition. While the action-packed story—inspired by the classic games, but not a direct adaptation—tends to appeal more to younger boys, it’s simply an enjoyable show. The challenges Sonic faces aren’t overly dangerous, but they’re enough to keep viewers engaged with each episode.
This show was ideal for watching a couple of episodes each week, giving you a fun Sonic fix before enjoying your weekend. Now, after many years, you can relive that experience!

3). Sailor Moon (Tubi, Pluto TV, Crunchyroll, Hulu)
If you’re looking for a show geared more towards younger girls, I’d definitely recommend Sailor Moon. It’s a really fun show with a fantastic group of characters who transform and use cool powers to fight evil. The action is exciting, but not too scary, and the show is just visually stunning. There are different versions of the anime available, and they’re all great for families to enjoy together. It’s no surprise it’s still so beloved after all these years!

2). Digimon (Hulu)
The most popular anime shows on Saturday mornings were definitely the ones featuring monsters kids could collect. Digimon was particularly well-suited for this, appealing to a wide range of young viewers and giving each child a unique companion Digimon. Unlike Pokemon, which had elements of animal fighting, Digimon focused on a group of kids having an exciting adventure throughout the summer in a fantastical world.
What’s great about this series is that it has something for everyone in the family, with different versions to appeal to various viewers. It’s worth checking out this exciting story!
1). Pokemon (Netflix, Prime Video, Pluto TV)
As we’ve touched on, Pokemon was hugely popular with kids, especially in the mornings. The show follows Ash Ketchum’s journey to become a Pokemon Master, and there are many, many episodes documenting his attempts – and often failures – to win the Pokemon League Championship.
After years of anticipation, fans finally saw Ash achieve his lifelong dream of becoming a world champion – a truly unique and satisfying conclusion you won’t find in many other shows. While it might be difficult to get a new viewer hooked, it explains why the Pokémon anime has remained so popular for so long.
