Warning: contains spoilers for The Punisher #1!
Marvel has announced the return of the Punisher, just before he appears in the upcoming “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” storyline. The Punisher’s character has been controversial in recent years, leading Marvel to temporarily stop using him. Now, with the controversy seemingly settled, Frank Castle is back in the Marvel Universe with his signature intensity.
As a huge fan, I’m so excited to hear that the Punisher is coming back to the MCU! Just as Frank Castle is kicking things up a notch in the comics, Jon Bernthal is officially returning to play him in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie, which is slated to come out in the summer of 2026. He really was the Punisher in Daredevil, and I can’t wait to see what he does with the role again.
This is just the beginning of the Punisher’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Beyond his appearance in Brand New Day, there’s talk that Frank Castle will also be featured in a Disney+ special. Marvel Comics has also launched a new ongoing series for the character, focusing on his efforts to rebuild his life, potentially setting up an unexpected team-up.
The Punisher’s New Book Sees Him Reunite With an Old Friend Turned Foe
Can Microchip Shock the Punisher Back to Reality?
When the Punisher first began his fight against crime, many in the Marvel Universe saw him as a villain – he was originally presented as one in Amazing Spider-Man #129. Even though fans grew to like the Punisher, other heroes remained wary of his methods. He did have one consistent supporter, though: his supply expert, Microchip.
The Punisher and Microchip used to be close, but they had a falling out and stopped speaking. Now, in the new Marvel comic The Punisher #1, writer Benjamin Percy and artist Jose Luis Soares are hinting at a possible reconciliation. However, this isn’t a happy reunion—it’s happening because they both need each other’s help.
As a huge fan of the Punisher, I’m really hooked by what’s happening now. Frank’s back, but he’s not himself – he’s all messed up with memory loss and doesn’t even fully remember who he is or what he’s fighting for. It’s terrifying because without a clear head, he’s even more dangerous. Honestly, it seems like Microchip is the only one who can get through to him and bring him back to his senses.
Microchip Was Once An Important Part of the Punisher’s War on Crime
The Punisher’s War Took Its Toll On His Friendship with Microchip
Microchip, first appearing in 1987’s The Punisher #4, had a significant history with the Punisher. Created by Mike Baron and Klaus Janson, he was Frank Castle’s supplier of weapons and technology, essential for his fight against crime. He was often compared to Q from the James Bond series, and proved to be a valuable ally.
The Punisher’s relentless war on criminals like Kingpin and Jigsaw damaged his relationship with Microchip. They had a major disagreement, mainly because the Punisher’s violence was escalating and Microchip couldn’t accept it. They’ve been enemies ever since.

The Punisher Will Need All the Allies He Can Get as Jigsaw Seeks to Be the Next Kingpin

Okay, so Frank Castle’s back from the dead, and that’s brought Microchip back into the picture. It’s really messed him up though – being used as a puppet, basically a brain-dead killer, has left him totally fractured. He’s still missing huge chunks of his memories and, honestly, it feels like he’s just operating on instinct at this point, like he doesn’t even fully know who he is anymore.
Okay, so in the latest issue of The Punisher, things are really messy. Frank’s still reeling from being brought back, and he’s convinced Microchip is to blame. He’s got Microchip held captive in his base, and the tension is thick. The issue centers around Microchip desperately trying to appeal to Frank, reminding him of their long, shared history. But the real kicker? Frank actually brings Microchip food near the end. It’s a small gesture, but it feels like maybe, just maybe, there’s a chance for these two to find some common ground, or at least a temporary truce. It’s a fascinating dynamic, and I’m really curious to see where this goes.
Frank Castle, the Punisher, might reconnect with his old ally Microchip just when he needs help the most. A dangerous enemy from the past, Jigsaw, is back and trying to take control now that the Kingpin is gone. After dealing with a rival, Jigsaw sets his sights on eliminating the Punisher, recognizing him as the only one who can stand in his way.
Marvel is Bringing the Punisher Back in a Major Way
Will Microchip Be a Part of the Punisher’s Big Comeback?
Marvel is making a clear effort to bring the Punisher back into its main storyline. This new issue heavily relies on familiar aspects of the character’s history, like his base of operations and iconic black van. It feels like a return to the Punisher’s origins, with his longtime ally, Microchip, by his side.
The Punisher’s recent return to his classic style in the comics happened shortly before the launch of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. With a new film on the way, Marvel seems to be strengthening the Punisher’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The comics are mirroring this by bringing Frank Castle back to his powerful roots, and potentially teaming him up with Microchip again.
