Retro Gamers Rejoice With the Retroid Pocket 6

In the last twenty years, a growing market has emerged for handheld consoles aimed at players who love classic games. These devices can play games ranging from the Atari 2600’s E.T. the Extra Terrestrial to the PlayStation Portable’s God of War: Chains of Olympus using technology called emulation. Many companies, mostly based in China, are successfully selling these affordable devices by tapping into people’s fondness for older games. While several brands exist, including ModRetro and Ayn, I want to highlight the new Retroid Pocket 6.

So, I just got the newest handheld from Retroid, and it’s awesome! It’s another Android-based retro gaming device you can snag directly from their site. Honestly, it kinda looks like a PSP at first glance, but it’s way more powerful and you can really customize it. It can handle pretty much any game you want to play, including older PSP titles. Now, I definitely want to be clear – I’m not saying you should download and play games you haven’t bought, that’s not cool. But if you have backups of games you do own, the Retroid Pocket 6 is a fantastic way to play them.

The Retroid Pocket 6 Is an Absolute Beast

The Retroid Pocket 6 originally launched with two versions: one with 8GB of RAM and a more powerful 12GB model. However, Retroid stopped making the 12GB version in March 2026 because the cost of RAM had become too high and it was hard to get. After discontinuing the 12GB model, they raised the price of the 8GB version by $20. While frustrating, this is a common trend – AI companies are purchasing large amounts of RAM, driving up prices across the board. There are even reports that the next generation of PlayStation and Xbox consoles may also be more expensive for the same reason.

Once you look past the initial issues, you’re left with a versatile Android handheld gaming device available in two main setups. You can choose to have the directional pad (D-Pad) positioned at the top or bottom of the left side – the top position is preferred by retro gamers, while the bottom is better for modern games, but ultimately it’s up to you. It comes in four different colors and has customizable LED lights around the control sticks. Inside, it’s powered by a fast 8 Gen 2 processor, runs the Android 13 operating system, and boasts a stunning 5.5-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a 1080p resolution and a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. It also includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a host of other features.

The Retroid Pocket 6 is a surprisingly powerful handheld gaming device. It excels at playing retro games through emulators, but it also runs many Steam games smoothly – a huge benefit, especially as the Steam Deck gets pricier and harder to get. Considering its small size and affordable price of around $244, the Retroid Pocket 6 offers excellent value. While more powerful and larger handhelds are available, you’d be hard-pressed to find similar quality for the same price.

The Retroid Pocket 6 Is a Great Alternative to More Expensive Optioins

The Retroid Pocket 6 is a great choice for gamers who enjoy playing a wide variety of games on different platforms. Since it runs on Android and has built-in controls, it’s perfect for Android games, but you can also use it for other things like watching movies – basically anything you do on your phone. As someone who loves retro gaming systems, I’ve been impressed with Retroid’s products, and the Pocket 6 is a particularly strong offering with a lot to recommend it.
