The popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe further solidified their position, even if it didn’t translate to huge comic book sales. However, things shifted in 2025. DC Comics, boosted by their Absolute line of books and the success of Superman in the DC Universe, is now in the lead – a position they haven’t held in a long time. They’ve recently strengthened that lead with DC K.O., a major event that’s expected to continue their winning streak.

DC’s current comic book run has been incredibly successful, putting them in a leading position. Marvel is responding with a new Avengers relaunch, tied to the ‘Armageddon’ event and titled ‘Avengers: Armageddon,’ aiming to revitalize the team after a period of underwhelming performance. While Marvel usually has a strong chance of regaining the top spot, DC is performing so well that even the well-known Avengers might struggle to compete.

DC K.O. Perfectly Sets Up the Next Chapter of the DC Multiverse

Many fans hoped DC All-In would revitalize DC Comics, and 2025 proved them right. The 2024 publishing strategy continued the work started with the Dawn of DC initiative: bringing back the classic DC Multiverse with a modern twist. Recently, DC’s ongoing series were heavily focused on Batman, with only a few titles – like Action Comics, Wonder Woman, Superman: Son of Kal-El, The Flash, and Titans Academy – featuring other heroes. This needed to change, and DC All-In #1 launched a compelling story that has spanned both the main DC line and the Absolute line, ultimately leading to a long-awaited win for the publisher.

DC’s recent event, DC K.O., successfully captured fans’ attention and boosted sales – something Marvel hasn’t achieved consistently in a while. The story, which centered on heroes battling Darkseid’s quest to become a god, was exciting and has set the stage for future storylines. DC effectively used this event to build momentum for what’s coming next, similar to how Marvel handled events in the 2000s, but with more impact than Marvel has shown recently.

The future looks incredibly promising for DC Comics. The recent story arc in DC K.O. perfectly sets the stage for what’s coming next, and their Absolute editions are consistently top-quality. Beloved series like Superman, Batman, Justice League Unlimited, JSA, Poison Ivy, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Nightwing, Action Comics, Superman Unlimited, Green Lantern, and many others continue to resonate with fans. With DC Next Level, characters like Batwoman, Lobo, Deathstroke, Zatanna, and Firestorm are returning to comic book stores, and fans are thrilled with the direction things are going – and it’s only getting better!

As a longtime comic fan, I have to say DC is really hitting its stride. They’ve assembled an incredible team of writers and artists, and what’s really impressive is how much they actually listen to what fans want. Plus, the success of the Absolute editions has clearly given them the resources to do some amazing things. Honestly, reader satisfaction is through the roof – something Marvel hasn’t achieved in years. Seeing the talent DC has, the passion of their fanbase, and the critical acclaim their books are getting, it feels like they’ve reached a new high. It’s going to be a real challenge for Marvel to catch up, especially considering where they are right now. I’m just really enjoying what DC is putting out!

Marvel Is Going to Have to Work Very Hard to Even Match DC, Let Alone Surpass Them

Marvel has been struggling lately while DC has gained momentum. Recent attempts to revitalize key franchises, like the X-Men in 2024 and the Avengers in 2023, haven’t resonated with audiences. The new ‘Ultimate’ line of comics also hasn’t performed as well as hoped, leaving fans generally dissatisfied. While some titles, such as Captain America, The Infernal Hulk, and Mortal Thor, are still strong, it’s inaccurate to say Marvel fans are currently excited about the direction of the comics. A lack of top-tier creative talent, stemming from the company’s cost-cutting measures, is a significant factor.

The Armageddon event could be a crucial moment for Marvel, and writer Chip Zdarsky is off to a strong start. However, past successes haven’t always translated into overall wins for the publisher. DC K.O. has given DC a significant advantage – even if Armageddon is perfect, Marvel will likely still be playing catch-up. DC currently has the upper hand, making the competition between the two publishers particularly exciting.
