The Summer I Turned Pretty star gives update on movie progress – and it’s not good news for fans

Last year, as the third season of The Summer I Turned Pretty was being released weekly on Prime Video, many viewers believed it would be the final season featuring Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah.

Despite the finale seeming like a definitive ending, a sequel movie was quickly announced, and the original cast will be back.

We haven’t heard much about the movie lately, and it sounds like that might not change anytime soon, according to actor Gavin Casalegno, who played Jeremiah.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, published today but conducted on February 26th, director Casalegno admitted they haven’t even started writing the script for the movie, meaning a filming date is currently unknown.

He explained it would feel sudden, like being unexpectedly thrown into a project – similar to how the author Jenny Han might call him and say he needs to travel somewhere within a week. He added that they’d just have to wait and see what unfolds.

Casalegno admitted he doesn’t know what happens in the movie, but he believes at least one fan theory will turn out to be true.

Although the news is upsetting, it wasn’t entirely unexpected. Back in September, the show’s creator, Jenny Han, mentioned to Variety that the release date was uncertain, explaining that they hadn’t even started filming and couldn’t confidently predict a release next year.

You know, as a film fan, what really struck me about what she said was how much she valued giving the young actors a bit more time to grow into their roles – and, honestly, just grow up a little bit! It’s not just about the performance, it’s about letting them experience that natural progression, and that really resonated with me.
