HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series still needs to fill one key role, but that’s to be expected – casting can take time. Sixteen years after the Harry Potter films concluded with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, Warner Bros. is returning to the Wizarding World with a fresh take on Harry’s story. This time, instead of movies, HBO is planning a longer, more detailed adaptation of the books as a TV series.
Rumors about a new version of the story began circulating in 2021, with Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod heading up the creative team. By May 2025, the main cast was announced: Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Alastair Stout will be Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton will portray Hermione Granger. Joining them are John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
It’s worth noting that the new Harry Potter TV series is still lacking a key character from the original stories. Although this might worry some fans, it’s actually similar to how announcements were handled during the original movie series, so a delay isn’t necessarily a bad sign.
HBO’s Harry Potter Remake Series Still Hasn’t Cast Voldemort

It’s been almost a year since the main actors were announced for the upcoming HBO series, but the role of Lord Voldemort hasn’t been filled yet. Many actors have been suggested by fans as potential candidates, including well-known names like Cillian Murphy, Damian Lewis, Paul Bettany, and Mark Strong. HBO hasn’t commented on the casting, which is understandable given how passionate fans are about these choices, especially for such a central character like the Dark Lord.
Cillian Murphy has confirmed he is not going to play Voldemort in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series, putting an end to recent speculation. While many fans thought he would be a fantastic choice – especially after his Oscar-winning performance in Oppenheimer – it’s a bit of a letdown that he’s not taking on the role. However, by clearing up the rumors now, the show can move forward and explore other actors for the part.
Even though production on the Harry Potter TV series is underway, HBO doesn’t need to cast the role of Lord Voldemort right away. In fact, they may not have even begun looking for an actor yet.
Why HBO Can Afford To Delay Harry Potter Remake’s New Voldemort Casting

The new Harry Potter TV series doesn’t need to cast the role of Voldemort right away. The show could even begin without that actor being chosen. In the original films, Ralph Fiennes, who played Voldemort, didn’t appear until the fourth movie, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which came out four years after the very first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
It’s currently unclear how HBO will divide the Harry Potter story for its new TV series. The previous movies generally covered one book each, except for the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which was split into two films to fully tell its complex story. If HBO follows this pattern, it will likely take a couple of years – or even longer – to find the actor who will play Lord Voldemort. If the show is a big hit, Warner Bros. Television might try to extend the series even further, taking advantage of the continued popularity of the Harry Potter franchise.
One of the biggest advantages of turning a book into a TV series, rather than a movie, is the ability to tell a more detailed story. While the Harry Potter films were fantastic, they had to fit everything into a limited amount of time. The new series will have more time to develop the characters and explore parts of the books that weren’t shown in the movies, all brought to life in a live-action format.
The delay gives HBO more time to find the right actor to play Lord Voldemort in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series – a difficult task, given how popular Ralph Fiennes was in the role. It’s better to wait longer for a good announcement than to have HBO rush and potentially cast someone fans dislike.
The Harry Potter remake is expected to debut on HBO and HBO Max in 2027.
