7 DC Villains That Became Deadly Threats in Alternate Realities

DC Comics is where the modern idea of superheroes and supervillains began. Building on popular stories from the early 20th century – like detective tales, science fiction, and adventure stories – DC created the first characters of this type. For decades, they’ve also been home to some of the most iconic villains in comics, who constantly challenge the most powerful heroes. Creating compelling villains is a delicate balance – they need to be threatening, but ultimately can’t succeed in taking over. DC has consistently kept its villains strong and interesting, and one way they do that is by exploring alternate universes and different versions of these characters.

These stories explore what happens when villains defeat DC’s strongest heroes, highlighting just how terrifying they can be. In alternate universes, many villains have become even more powerful and threatening – even those already known as formidable foes. Here are seven DC villains who are significantly more deadly in these alternate realities, actually succeeding in their plans and defeating their enemies.

7) The Joker

The Joker is famous for being a dangerous villain, and while he’s responsible for many deaths, he’s only directly killed a few key characters in the main DC universe – Jason Todd and Sarah Essen, though the latter is often forgotten. However, in different versions of the DC story, the Joker is far more lethal. For example, he’s killed Robin and Batgirl in one alternate storyline, and even killed Lois Lane twice in separate alternate universes within the Kingdom Come and Injustice comics. These alternate stories demonstrate the full extent of the Joker’s potential as a truly formidable threat to even the most powerful heroes.

6) Lex Luthor

Lex Luthor is widely considered DC’s most intelligent villain, and he’s been a persistent enemy of Superman for years. Though he occasionally wins small battles, in other universes, he’s far more dangerous. These alternate versions of Lex have actually killed Superman multiple times – a trend that began with classic stories from the Silver Age of comics – and have even managed to conquer the world, wiping out most other superheroes in the process. While Lex is always a formidable opponent, his alternate universe counterparts are significantly more lethal than the one most fans know.

5) Bizarro

“Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?” is considered a classic Superman story, and it features two villains we’ll be discussing. The first is Bizarro, a flawed copy of Superman who unexpectedly begins murdering people in Metropolis. This shocking behavior immediately signaled a dark turn for Superman and his allies, as they were pushed to their limits by his enemies. Bizarro is generally a frightening foe, but a murderous Bizarro is especially terrifying.

4) Mr. Mxyzptlk

Mr. Mxyzptlk is often seen as a comical villain, but that hides a frightening truth. This imp from the Fifth Dimension has nearly limitless power to change reality. While he usually uses it for harmless pranks, the story “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?” revealed that he chooses to be funny. He spent ages being a playful trickster, but could easily become incredibly dangerous. In fact, that story showed that all the terrible acts committed by Superman’s enemies were actually caused by Mxyzptlk subtly manipulating them, proving just how powerful and frightening he could be if he truly wanted to be.

3) Ultra-Humanite

Ultra-Humanite is a classic supervillain who has fought Superman and various Justice League teams throughout the years. He’s proven to be incredibly dangerous in a couple of different storylines. In JSA: The Golden Age, he masterminds a plot that nearly wipes out the entire superhero community – it’s a story with a great surprise, so we won’t spoil it here! And in “Stealing Thunder,” he takes control of Johnny Thunder, using the powerful Thunderbolt genie to attempt world domination, killing heroes and imprisoning others.

2) The Batman Who Laughs

The Batman Who Laughs was a major villain in DC Comics for a while, appearing throughout the ‘Dark Knights: Metal’ and ‘Dark Knights: Death Metal’ storylines. While he was presented as incredibly evil, he didn’t actually kill many people – with Perpetua being the main exception. He often fought heroes without causing much bloodshed. However, in different universes, he was a ruthless killer. On his home Earth, he wiped out everyone – all the heroes, villains, and ordinary people. But when brought to the main DC universe, he remains a powerful threat, though not as deadly.

1) Darkseid

DC Comics is known for its powerful villains, and Darkseid is arguably the worst of them. While he’s incredibly strong, he hasn’t actually killed many major heroes in the main DC Universe. However, in different versions of reality, Darkseid has defeated and killed some of DC’s most powerful heroes. Stories like the classic “Rock of Ages” show alternate universes where he’s victorious, and in those worlds, he’s responsible for the deaths of iconic heroes – something he hasn’t managed to do in the primary DC timeline.
