Filming for the God of War TV series has begun on Prime Video, but a crucial character hasn’t been cast yet. The show, based on the popular PlayStation games, is highly anticipated and will cover the stories of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok over two seasons. Outlander and Battlestar Galactica’s Ronald D. Moore is leading the series, and the production team includes some of the people who made Prime Video’s Fallout adaptation a hit.
As a longtime fan of the God of War saga, I’ve been closely watching the casting for the upcoming Prime Video series, and it’s definitely intriguing. They’ve already filled out a lot of the major roles – Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus are great starting points – and they’ve gone on to cast actors as Baldur, Sif, Thor, Odin, and pretty much the whole Norse pantheon, including Mimir, Brok, Sindri, and even the giants. But honestly, there’s one crucial character noticeably absent from the announced cast, and it’s making me wonder how they’ll handle things. It seems like this adaptation might be playing with the timeline a bit, and that missing piece could be key.
The key to understanding the story is Freya, a powerful Norse goddess associated with love and new life. She was once married to Odin, but he mistreated her and eventually sent her to live in Midgard, the realm of humans, where she meets Kratos and his son, Atreus.
Why Freya Is So Important in God of War

I’m a huge fan of the Norse mythology woven into the new God of War, and Freya is such a key character! When Kratos and Atreus first encounter her, she’s pretending to be this mysterious Witch of the Woods. She actually helps them bring Mimir’s head back to life, which is a huge moment in the story!
When Kratos learns who Freya is, he’s immediately wary of her, as he generally doesn’t trust any of the gods due to his experiences in Greece. Despite this, Freya becomes an important ally, helping Kratos and Atreus complete their journey to scatter the ashes of Faye (Kratos’s late wife) at the mountaintop, just as she requested.
Freya is also a key character because she’s Baldur’s mother. Baldur, who will be played by Ed Skrein in the new adaptation, is the first villain Kratos faces, initially known only as “the Stranger.” He eventually becomes a major threat to both Kratos and Atreus, largely because of his immortality – a result of a protective spell cast by Freya.
Okay, so the first game culminates in a brutal showdown between Kratos, Atreus, and Baldur. It’s a tense fight, but Atreus manages to pierce Baldur’s defenses – mistletoe being his Achilles’ heel, apparently. Then things get really complicated. Freya, Baldur’s mother, tries to stop the fight, wanting to save her son but also prevent him from killing Kratos and Atreus. But Baldur ultimately betrays her, and Kratos is forced to kill him to protect Freya. It’s a tragic moment, and honestly, I knew it wouldn’t end there. Freya, understandably, is furious and immediately swears revenge on Kratos for taking her son’s life. It sets up a seriously compelling conflict for the next installment.

This leads to her role in God of War: Ragnarok, where Freya has an even bigger part to play.
At first, Freya tries to fulfill her promise of revenge by fighting Kratos and Atreus. However, she eventually joins forces with Kratos, hoping he can help her escape Midgard. Together, they team up to fight a bigger enemy, Odin, and Freya becomes a helpful companion the player can control.
Besides Kratos and Atreus, Freya is a major character in the recent God of War games, and she’s expected to be important in the upcoming TV series. However, even though filming has begun in Vancouver, an actress to play Freya hasn’t been announced yet.
Who Should Play Freya in Prime Video’s God of War?

Now that filming for the God of War series has begun, it’s probable that Freya’s actor has either already been chosen secretly, or a decision will be made very soon – possibly even included in the recent casting call. Because Freya is a key character, the casting process might take a little extra time, but we likely won’t have to wait long to find out who will play her.
In the God of War games, Freya is portrayed as a fair-skinned woman with dark hair. Danielle Bisutti provided both the voice and performance capture for the character. Similar to how The Last of Us brought back original cast members for its game adaptation, God of War also featured performers from the source material – most notably Alastair Duncan as Mimir. Because of this, and considering Bisutti’s physical resemblance to Freya and understanding of the role, casting her in the live-action adaptation would be a strong possibility.
Hollywood has many talented actresses who could convincingly play Freya. Rebecca Ferguson, for example, has both the strong personality and action movie background – thanks to roles in films like Mission: Impossible and Dune – to pull it off. Alicia Vikander and Olivia Wilde would also be excellent choices for the part.
It’s not necessary for the actress playing Freya to be a huge celebrity. What matters most to the team behind the God of War show is finding the right person for the role, and they seem to be prioritizing that over star power with all of their casting choices so far.
