The Capture season 3 airs update on Callum Turner’s Shaun Emery – and he almost had a much bigger role

*Spoiler warning for The Capture season 3 episode 1, which is available now on BBC iPlayer*

The TV show ‘The Capture’ has provided news about Callum Turner, who originally starred as Lance Corporal Shaun Emery.

Okay, so in the first season of this BBC thriller, I followed Carey – brilliantly played by Holliday Grainger – as she initially suspected Emery of murder. But the real twist? It turned out he was actually the one being framed, and the season revolved around uncovering the truth – a reveal cleverly titled ‘Correction’. It was a compelling setup, and I was hooked!

Even so, the initial episodes concluded with Emery choosing to go to prison for manslaughter. He did this to prevent even more serious charges of child abuse and as a way to atone for things he’d done while serving as a soldier.

The new season begins months after the events of the previous finale, where Carey revealed the truth about ‘Correction’. We learn that Emery has been released from prison and is back with his family, as reported on BBC News.

So, a happy ending for the character – even if it remains off-screen.

I was really hoping to see more of Emery’s story in season 3, so I asked the show’s creator, Ben Chanan, about it at a recent preview. He was pretty direct – he just said, ‘No.’ It’s disappointing, but at least we have a clear answer.

Chanan explained that the person in question had been released, ending the matter. He then speculated about future seasons, wondering what might happen in seasons four, five, and six.

We did consider giving him a larger role, but we ultimately decided on a different approach that felt better for the story.

He explained that his initial concept involved the Home Secretary being attacked, with Carey successfully stopping the assailant. However, the attacker would die before being questioned, leaving a lack of mystery. He realized this wouldn’t work because the core mystery would be resolved too quickly with the villains already defeated. He initially had about half of the idea fleshed out before realizing it wasn’t a strong enough premise.

Rachel Carey is already dealing with a lot after the dramatic first episode, where Home Secretary Isaac Turner was shot right in front of her. Now, things are even more complicated because the shooter seems to be her new boss, Noah Pierson.

Yet, Emery almost had a role here…

Ben Chanan exclusively told TopMob that at one point, it was Emery who was the killer.

Chanan explained that the team gathered a writers’ room and developed a significantly different storyline. This new plot would have brought back Shaun Emery, the killer from season one (played by Callum Turner), and only Carey would have been able to recognize him.

While I’d happily work with Callum Turner again, I realized I was painting myself into a corner with that particular storyline.

Well, just how the thriller follows up that jaw-dropping cliffhanger, we’ll have to wait and see!

I’ve been seeing Callum Turner in so many things lately – he’s clearly a really in-demand actor! Plus, everyone’s talking about him potentially being the next James Bond, which is wild. Honestly, I’m excited to see what he does next – it could be anything!

You can watch the next episode of The Capture next Sunday on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. If you missed the earlier seasons, both season 1 and season 2 are currently available to stream on iPlayer.
