10 Riverdale Moments That Prove It Was The Most Unhinged TV Show Of All Time

Riverdale is easily the most chaotic TV show ever made, and these ten moments perfectly demonstrate why. From 2017 to 2023, The CW’s adaptation of Archie Comics consistently pushed the boundaries of how wild a teen drama could be. In Riverdale, it feels like every possible disaster happens.

The show Riverdale began with a straightforward murder investigation in its first season. But things quickly escalated! By the end, the characters were dealing with several serial killers, a bizarre conspiracy linked to Dungeons & Dragons, and even a villain from another dimension. Honestly, it’s baffling why anyone would choose to live in that town considering all the crazy things that happen there.

Honestly, Riverdale is completely wild. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I’d think someone was making it all up as a joke. These ten moments really show just how crazy the show gets.

10. Archie & The Prison Fight Club

Considering everything that happens in Riverdale, Archie being falsely accused and sent to juvenile detention wasn’t a huge shock. Hiram Lodge is incredibly manipulative and consistently goes too far. However, even for that show, it was completely wild that Archie was then forced to participate in a Fight Club inside the detention center, where wealthy townspeople were betting on the fights.

Archie wasn’t a typical prison, but a place holding mostly kids who had committed minor offenses. Surprisingly, it seemed like wealthy people were perfectly fine with watching these teenagers fight seriously. And if that wasn’t strange enough, our main character, a determined redhead, decides the solution is to give an inspiring speech about “the exciting ups and downs of high school football.”

9. Every Musical Episode Of Riverdale

As a big Riverdale fan, I always looked forward to their yearly musical episodes – they were so over-the-top and a little cheesy, but always fun! They really became a signature thing for the show, and people had strong opinions about them. But something I always found interesting, and nobody ever talks about, is how the show consistently picked musicals that would be totally off-limits for most high school productions. Seriously, some of those choices were wild!

It’s hard to believe a school would allow productions of shows like Heathers the Musical or American Psycho, given their focus on murder. Carrie The Musical might be considered, but it’s still questionable. Next to Normal, which deals with serious issues like suicide and drug abuse, was actually performed, and at least one production of Hedwig recognized that a school principal would likely object to it.

As a critic, I have to say the musical episodes of Riverdale are… a lot. They consistently throw in these incredibly over-the-top storylines – we’re talking serial killer conventions, conversion therapy for Cheryl, even a Serpent threesome at school! All while dealing with heavier stuff like the Black Hood, Polly’s death, and Archie’s… theatrical ambitions. Honestly, it’s a bizarre mix, and that’s putting it mildly. They somehow manage to be both the absolute peak and the absolute nadir of everything Riverdale tries to do. It’s a wild ride, and not always a good one, but you can’t look away.

8. Everyone Joins An Organ-Harvesting Cult

Combine a town constantly facing crises, a powerful and self-important religious figure, and illegal underground activity, and you get the bizarre organ-harvesting cult storyline from Riverdale season 3. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen in a teen drama – even Pretty Little Liars, known for its twists, wouldn’t have attempted something so extreme.

It’s surprisingly funny how Edgar got almost the entire town and high school involved in his schemes. Yet, he successfully kept his horrifying secret – that he was secretly killing people and selling their organs – hidden. And to make things even crazier, Penelope Blossom was actually buying those organs, creating a completely wild storyline that somehow works perfectly.

7. The Riverdale Cast Is Transported To The 1950s

The sixth season of Riverdale ends with a comet threatening to wipe out the town. But by then, the show had already embraced a fantastical world filled with superheroes, villains from other dimensions, and even guardian angels. Tabitha manages to save everyone by sending the whole town back in time to 1955—a solution that could only happen in Riverdale.

The final season of Riverdale flashes back to the characters’ younger years. Betty ends up as the publisher of a feminist magazine called The Teenage Mystique, while Jughead pursues writing comedy. Veronica achieves success as an Oscar-winning film producer, and Archie finds a dual life as a construction worker and poet. Interestingly, the four of them enter a polyamorous relationship, which feels fitting given their history of complicated pairings.

6. Archie’s Football War Dream

Considering everything that happens in Riverdale, Archie deciding to join the military isn’t exactly a shock. He’s already been in a fight club, wrestled a bear, taken up boxing, and even started a community center with a boxing ring, so this feels like a natural progression. However, this storyline quickly led to one of the strangest scenes the show has ever produced.

Archie has a strange dream where he’s a soldier in World War I, but the battle is happening on a football field with his friends, the River Vixens, cheering him on. Just before he wakes up, he sees Hiram Lodge pointing a gun at him. The dream is bizarre and feels almost like a hallucination, but it’s surprisingly effective.

5. Betty & Jughead Have An Evil Half-Brother

Okay, so Betty and Jughead, honestly, they were a bit of a surprise pairing, but it almost worked for a while. But being Riverdale, things couldn’t stay simple, could they? They had to throw in a major twist: it turns out Betty and Jughead have a half-brother! Apparently, FP Jones and Alice Cooper had a child together, and his name is Charles. It’s classic Riverdale drama!

Okay, so things get really complicated! I was totally shocked when Charles started seeing this guy, Chic, who seemed…off. It turned out Chic faked Charles’s death, but it was all a big setup! Charles had actually gone undercover with the FBI. Then, to make things even crazier, Chic started pretending to be Charles and hung out with his family, the Coopers. The big reveal? Chic was a complete fake, but Alice had known all along! She’d been secretly working with the real Charles the whole time to bring down this dangerous group called The Farm. It was a wild ride, honestly!

Jughead and Betty encounter the true Charles, and they immediately distrust him, with good reason. It’s revealed that Charles carries a genetic predisposition to violence and acts on it, murdering the students who had planned to harm Jughead. This leads to his arrest, though he remains connected with Chic throughout the ordeal. It’s a lot to take in!

4. Edgar Evernever Goes Evel Knievel

Edgar Evernever played a key role in the story arc surrounding The Farm, but the way his story ended was completely wild and deserves mention. It turns out that all his strange activities – stealing organs and ordering pizzas – were part of a plan to build a rocket and escape the FBI.

What’s fun about Riverdale is that it doesn’t even try to explain how Edgar built such a large rocket without anyone realizing it. And to make things even crazier, he intended to fly away in it wearing a jumpsuit that looked like something Evel Knievel would wear.

True to the show’s style, Riverdale never bothered to explain the character’s plans for the rocket. One Reddit user, u/Locke108, jokingly suggested he had a whole fleet of rockets to make repeated trips to Canada. But honestly, on Riverdale, escaping to outer space seems just as likely. That’s just the kind of show it is!

3. The Riverdale Cast Gets Supernatural Powers

By season 6, Riverdale had fully embraced its over-the-top nature. After a bomb exploded, the characters unexpectedly gained superpowers, and the writers cleverly tailored each power to fit the personality of each Riverdale character.

After surviving a traumatic event, Archie gained the ability to withstand any harm. Betty has a knack for spotting dangerous people, so it’s no surprise she can also read auras. Jughead’s always been a great detective, and now he can even read minds. Veronica, known for her alluring personality, now has a kiss that can deliver poison. And Cheryl, with her fiery personality, can control fire with her mind.

Fortunately, instead of being embarrassed by how over-the-top Riverdale has become with its superhero plot, the show leans into the absurdity. What makes this wild storyline work so well is that it feels like a throwback to the Archie’s Weird Mysteries comics.

2. Archie’s Bear Attack

One of the most talked-about bizarre storylines in Riverdale involves Archie being attacked by a bear in season 3. After fleeing Riverdale’s mob with his dog, Vegas, Archie unexpectedly becomes a park ranger in Canada at the young age of 17. The situation gets even stranger when he learns about a bear in the area but still chooses to take Vegas for a walk.

Archie has an incredible encounter – he actually fights a bear and lives! However, the injuries he sustains lead to hallucinations of his friends. Honestly, describing this plot feels like summarizing a strange fan-made story, not something you’d see on TV. It’s the kind of wild and unbelievable storyline you’d only expect from Riverdale.

1. Cheryl Keeps Her Brother’s Corpse In The House

While the bear fight is famous, the most far-fetched storyline in Riverdale to me is Cheryl keeping Jason’s body in the chapel. It’s hard to believe Jason can’t just rest peacefully, considering how often his body is exhumed. Their relationship always felt a little too close, and this plotline only amplifies that unsettling feeling.

Cheryl regularly went to the basement to talk to the body of her brother. She treated him as if he were still alive, applying makeup, stitching up his gunshot wound, and even changing his clothes. Surprisingly, despite being dead, his body remained remarkably well-preserved and didn’t smell.

The plot takes a truly disturbing turn when a rat crawls out of someone’s chest. It’s shocking that Cheryl is keeping Jason’s body in her basement, but honestly, it feels perfectly in line with the show’s bizarre nature. Riverdale has always leaned into dark themes, and Cheryl has always been a bit unstable, so her involvement in this wildly unpredictable storyline just fits.
