The Sean Bean-led Robin Hood TV series has been renewed for a second season on MGM+, offering a chance to revitalize this often-difficult franchise. Many successful Robin Hood adaptations already exist, ranging from the classic Disney cartoon to the big-budget film starring Kevin Costner (complete with a Bryan Adams soundtrack), and even a comedic take by Mel Brooks.
As a lifelong movie fan, I’ve always loved the Robin Hood story, but Hollywood’s had a tough time making it a lasting franchise for the last twenty years or so. However, with the recent Robin Hood TV series getting renewed for a second season, it finally feels like things are turning around. I’m really excited to see where they take it!
2010 & 2018’s Live-Action Robin Hood Adaptations Were Unsuccessful
Over the past decade, filmmakers have tried three times to launch a successful live-action Robin Hood franchise. These attempts include a 2010 film, a 2018 movie, and a recent TV series. Unfortunately, despite each project taking a unique angle, none of them have achieved lasting success.
Ridley Scott’s 2010 film, Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe, tried to reimagine the classic tale as a serious, action-packed historical drama, similar to Gladiator. However, this approach made the movie feel flat and uninspired. While Crowe gave a strong performance, the film lost the playful spirit that makes the Robin Hood story enjoyable.
The 2018 film, with Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx, was entertaining but lacked real depth. It tried to reinvent Robin Hood as a big-budget action movie like those from Marvel, but ultimately felt hollow and unoriginal. Both this film and the earlier one failed to launch the planned franchise series.
The TV show on MGM+ appears to have been a success. It first aired in November 2025, and after a few months of anticipation, a second season was confirmed in February.
Sean Bean’s 2025 Robin Hood Series Gets The Formula Right
The upcoming 2025 series, Robin Hood, features Jack Patten as Robin Hood, Lauren McQueen as Maid Marian, and Marcus Fraser as Little John. Connie Nielsen plays Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Bean portrays the Sheriff of Nottingham, Robin’s main enemy. The show follows the familiar characters and storyline of the classic Robin Hood tale, but executes it exceptionally well.
I’ve always loved the story of Robin Hood, and honestly, there’s something brilliant about revisiting a classic that just works. That show really gets it – the feeling of satisfaction when someone stands up to injustice and shares wealth is incredibly powerful. Sadly, the gap between the rich and poor still exists, which is why this legend feels so relevant even now. The TV series perfectly captures that spirit of giving and takes it to a new audience, and I find it incredibly satisfying to watch.
The movie delivers on exciting action sequences. Even critics who didn’t love it acknowledged how enjoyable it was to watch this take on Robin Hood fight. Previous films from 2010 and 2018 also featured strong action, which is something you can always expect from a Robin Hood story, even if the movie itself isn’t perfect.
Robin Hood Can Get Even Better In Season 2
When Robin Hood first aired last year, it received generally positive feedback, though it wasn’t a massive hit. The show was enjoyable, but had potential to be even better. While it didn’t offer a completely new take on the classic Robin Hood story, the second season could explore the legend in a more innovative way.
Now that the first season has introduced all the main characters, the second season of Robin Hood has the opportunity to develop them further. We might see the Sheriff of Nottingham become a better person, and the show could explore the connection between Robin and Maid Marian more fully. With these developments, the series could really become exceptional.
