Major Shonen Jump Series Takes Unexpected Hiatus Ahead of Anime’s Debut

RuriDragon, a popular fantasy series from Shonen Jump by Masaoki Shindo, first appeared as a short story in Shueisha’s Jump GIGA magazine. It began as a regular series in Weekly Shonen Jump in June 2022, and later moved to the Shonen Jump+ digital platform in April 2024 after a break of over a year and a half. The manga has only released 45 chapters in nearly four years, partly due to Shindo’s health. Currently, there are four collected volumes, with three available in English. The fourth volume, released in Japan in November 2025, doesn’t have a confirmed English release date yet. New chapters are published every two weeks and can be read on the official Manga Plus app.

Following the release of Chapter 44 on January 25, 2026, the manga took a one-month break before returning with Chapter 45 on March 8, 2026. The author announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the next chapter will be released on April 27th, Japan Standard Time. Although the official reason for the pause hasn’t been stated, it’s probably due to the author’s health, which has caused previous breaks. Given the manga’s irregular release schedule, this isn’t an unusually long hiatus, even though it followed a dramatic cliffhanger.

What Is RuriDragon About?

Okay, so this anime is amazing! It follows Ruri Aoki, a totally normal high school girl, who one morning just… wakes up with horns! Turns out her dad is a dragon, and she’s half-dragon herself! It’s wild! But the coolest part is, even with this huge secret, she still tries to live her life – getting ready for school, worrying about being late, all while trying to wrap her head around the fact that dragons are real! I mean, we’re taught they’re just myths, right? It’s such a fun premise!

Despite a recent and unexpected change in her life, she tries to maintain a normal routine, but finds it difficult due to the unwanted attention she receives at school. As people notice her different look, her everyday life becomes increasingly chaotic. The story follows her journey of self-discovery and the emergence of her hidden abilities amidst all the turmoil.

An anime version of the series, produced by the highly respected Kyoto Animation studio, was announced in December 2025. This news generated excitement as it marks the studio’s first adaptation of a Shonen Jump manga. Although no release date or specific details have been shared yet, we anticipate more information becoming available this year. You can read all the chapters online through the official Manga Plus app or on the Viz Media website, which also provides links to purchase the manga volumes in English, both physically and digitally.
