Major Grogu Theory Officially Debunked Ahead of Star Wars’ Next Movie

Star Wars fans are excited to see The Mandalorian and Grogu back in theaters, and the future looks promising for the adorable character known as “Baby Yoda.” Grogu first appeared in The Mandalorian back in 2019 and quickly became a global sensation. Lucasfilm made a smart move by keeping him a secret until the show premiered, even though it meant delaying merchandise sales. This decision ultimately ensured Grogu’s lasting popularity, and the new trailer suggests he could be around in the Star Wars universe much longer than other beloved characters.

After the Golden Reel Awards, Lucasfilm’s former president, Kathleen Kennedy, addressed a popular fan theory in an interview with Variety. She confirmed that Grogu, the beloved character from The Mandalorian, will not speak in the upcoming film. Kennedy emphasized that Grogu’s ability to connect with audiences comes from his expressions and emotions, not dialogue. She believes viewers will love him even more in the movie, despite him remaining silent.

Lucasfilm Need To Tread Carefully With Grogu

Fans thought Grogu, the character from The Mandalorian, might start talking in Season 3, especially in a cute scene where he attempts to say Din Djarin’s famous line, “This is the way.” However, the show’s creator, Jon Favreau, wasn’t certain when Grogu would begin to speak, suggesting he might already be communicating in his own way. Recent comments from Kathleen Kennedy indicate that Lucasfilm isn’t planning to give Grogu a voice anytime soon.

It’s understandable why Grogu’s story is handled carefully. He’s become incredibly popular – a major brand for Star Wars – and the studio is cautious about changing anything that makes him successful. In fact, even having Grogu fully commit to the Mandalorian way at the end of Season 3 was a risk, because the tension between his Jedi past and his bond with Din Djarin was a key part of what viewers enjoyed. Ultimately, that internal conflict couldn’t continue indefinitely.

As a huge fan, I’ve been thinking about Grogu and when he might actually talk. Jon Favreau has said it’ll probably happen when he’s still young, but ‘young’ means something totally different when you’re dealing with a species that lives for centuries! It’s easy to forget Grogu is already over 50 years old – they clearly develop much slower than humans. And it’s interesting to remember Yoda was training Jedi by the time he was 100. But poor Grogu spent decades isolated, and that seems to have really stunted his growth. It’s a bit of a sad thought, honestly – a lot of his ‘baby-like’ behavior isn’t just cute, it’s likely due to past trauma.

It’s unclear what’s next for Grogu after the upcoming Star Wars movie. While the film’s success will likely be a major factor, The Mandalorian and Grogu was made with a relatively low budget, so it shouldn’t be difficult for the movie to become profitable. Lucasfilm will probably make a thoughtful decision about whether to continue Grogu’s adventures in theaters or on streaming, depending on how well the film does.
