Rumors that Ballistic Moon, the studio behind the 2024 remake of Until Dawn, had closed down surfaced last year. Now, official documents filed with the UK government confirm that the studio is indeed shut down. A final notice, filed on February 3rd, shows the company has been completely dissolved.
The initial legal notice signaling the company’s closure was filed on November 11th. Since then, the studio has submitted all necessary paperwork, including updates about changes in key staff positions. However, neither Sony nor the studio’s leaders have publicly commented on or confirmed the closure.
Ballistic Moon was a game studio created by developers previously at Supermassive Games, known for their work on story-driven horror games. Their main project was a remake of Until Dawn for PC and PlayStation 5, but the studio later closed down. The remake received mixed reviews, scoring a 70 on Metacritic. While the graphics were updated from the original PlayStation 4 version, reviewers pointed to the $59.99 price, the shift to a third-person camera, and technical problems as significant drawbacks.
The remake of Until Dawn didn’t attract many players when it launched, with numbers being 28% lower than the already unsuccessful launch of Concord. The development studio, Ballistic Moon, subsequently faced significant layoffs. Around 40 employees were let go in September 2024, followed by another 20 in December 2024. By March 2025, the studio was essentially closed, with only the founders and a small number of remaining staff still employed.
Until Dawn is a scary game where a group of friends on vacation find themselves in a terrifying situation. Their weekend getaway to a remote ski lodge turns into a nightmare when a prank leads to two friends disappearing. A year later, the remaining friends return to the lodge to remember their lost companions, but they soon realize something dangerous is happening, and they may be in mortal danger.
The game focuses on exploring the environment as you play through the story with eight different characters. You’ll piece together a mystery and experience action sequences that require quick reactions. Importantly, your choices as each character significantly affect the story, determining who survives and who doesn’t.
Last year, a film adaptation of Until Dawn was released, directed by David F. Sandberg. Although it shares a title and some ideas with the game, the movie tells a completely original story. It follows four friends as they venture into a secluded valley, hoping to uncover the truth behind a missing sister. They soon become stuck in a bizarre time loop, and many of them face terrifying deaths.
