Recently, Steam and Steam Deck users have been enjoying a growing library of games thanks to Microsoft bringing Xbox titles to the platform, and then PlayStation following suit. While Nintendo continues to keep its games exclusive, having a Steam account meant many players didn’t need to buy a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. Unfortunately, that advantage is now diminishing, leaving Steam Deck owners frustrated.
Recent reports indicate that PlayStation will stop releasing its major single-player games on PC. Players who want to experience these titles will now need to purchase a PlayStation console – either a PS5 or, in the future, a PS6. This change doesn’t affect games that are constantly updated with new content, known as ‘live service’ games.
“This Sucks”
On the Steam Deck subreddit, a recent post about this news is getting a lot of attention. Fans are responding with a mix of disappointment, confusion, and anger.
One Steam Deck user expressed disappointment, saying they were really enjoying Ghosts of Tsushima. Another user replied, noting they had purchased almost all available games.
Besides being disappointed, many commenters said they won’t be buying a PS5 because of this decision.
One commenter wrote, “I won’t be buying those games.” They explained that while they used to prioritize exclusive titles, they no longer want to support a company they see as greedy. They stated they’ll simply spend their money elsewhere if a game isn’t also available on PC.
PlayStation Portal Stock Rising
If Sony stops releasing its PlayStation games on computers, including the Steam Deck, the PlayStation Portal will likely become the only way to play those games on the go. However, getting set up for portable PlayStation gaming would be expensive – around $700 total, with $500 for the console itself and another $200 for the Portal. Most PC gamers probably won’t want to spend that much.
Valve’s Steam Deck recently faced criticism because the year’s biggest game release, as of now, didn’t receive official compatibility verification at launch, and that issue still hasn’t been fixed.
