5 Amazing Open-World RPGs With No Sequels

Open-world role-playing games are incredibly popular right now, with many great options available on various platforms. While games like Fallout are well-known, there are plenty of other fantastic choices. We’ve highlighted five excellent, self-contained open-world RPGs – meaning they don’t have sequels (at least not yet) – each with a complete story and a unique world to explore. There are many more great games out there, but we chose these five, presented in no specific order, as a starting point.

1) Ashen

Released in 2018, Ashen is an action role-playing game developed by A44 from New Zealand. Players take on the role of a wanderer searching for a place to call home in a large, open world. The game is visually striking with its unique cel-shaded graphics and offers both cooperative and competitive multiplayer experiences. Ashen includes crafting, character progression through gear, and engaging combat. While critically acclaimed and nominated for several awards, the game may have been overshadowed by other popular releases like Octopath Traveler, Monster Hunter: World, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

2) Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Released in 2012, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is an action role-playing game where you play as the Fateless One, a unique character unbound by fate. The game features a large, detailed world to explore, packed with quests, monsters, and dungeons. Its distinctive art style was influenced by the renowned artist Todd McFarlane. Critics praised the game’s impressive graphics and engaging combat, and it was quickly followed by two downloadable content packs. In 2020, the game received a remastered version called Re-Reckoning, which included the DLC and several improvements to balance and gameplay.

3) Disco Elysium

For a truly beautiful game world, check out Disco Elysium, a 2019 RPG that feels like stepping into an old master painting. You play as a detective who’s lost his memory and is investigating a murder with a colleague. As you progress, you’ll uncover the detective’s past and how he ended up in his current situation. Unlike most RPGs, Disco Elysium focuses heavily on conversation and skill checks rather than combat, giving it a feel similar to a tabletop role-playing game. It’s a remarkably unique and enjoyable experience that received widespread praise for its artistic merit and engaging gameplay, proving that video games can be both entertaining and a true art form.

4) The Ascent

Released in 2021, The Ascent is a visually stunning cyberpunk action-RPG played from an overhead, isometric perspective. Combat involves twin-stick shooting, and players improve their characters by installing and upgrading cyberware and hacking systems to unlock new areas. The game features a detailed and destructible open world. You can play The Ascent alone or with up to three friends. While it’s a great game for cyberpunk fans, it unfortunately came out around the same time as Cyberpunk 2077 and didn’t receive as much attention.

5) Vampyr

Released in 2018, Vampyr is an action role-playing game developed by Dontnod Entertainment. You play as Jonathan Reid, a doctor who’s been turned into a vampire, and the game focuses on his struggle to uphold his medical oath while needing to feed on human blood. What sets Vampyr apart is that you can often avoid fighting, even against bosses. Your choices in conversations heavily influence how the game progresses, and the story unfolds in a beautifully crafted, open-world version of London in the early 1900s. Though it’s not widely known, Vampyr is a great game and well worth playing if you enjoy the RPG genre.
