For over a hundred years, monster movies have been a consistent part of the film world. The genre started with silent films like Nosferatu, then moved to the classic Universal Monsters of the mid-20th century, and now features big-budget CGI spectacles like the Jurassic Park and Monsterverse series – with many movies being remade over time. Tubi subscribers can currently watch a highly-rated monster movie remake, but the original version from the 1930s isn’t available on the platform.
Peter Jackson’s remake of King Kong is now available to stream for free on Tubi, starting March 1st. However, the original 1933 King Kong film isn’t included and can only be rented or bought digitally. The story, set in the 1930s, follows a movie crew who travel to the remote Skull Island to film a picture. There, they discover and capture the enormous, prehistoric ape known as King Kong, and attempt to bring him back to New York City.
Peter Jackson’s King Kong Remake Is a Successful Tribute to the 1933 Original
Remaking a beloved movie from decades ago is always a gamble, but Peter Jackson’s King Kong was a huge success. The film earned $550 million and three Academy Awards, but more importantly, it lived up to the quality of the original 1933 classic. Jackson didn’t just update the story; he transformed a lively adventure into a three-hour epic. While staying true to the original plot, the remake adds emotional depth and expands the world, particularly on Skull Island. It also gives characters, like Ann Darrow and Kong, more fully developed relationships. The film lovingly references the original with recreated scenes and familiar dialogue, serving as a fantastic tribute while still forging its own path.
King Kong has been reimagined many times since the 1933 original, including in recent films like Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong. However, Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake remains the best. With an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s the second highest-rated King Kong movie, surpassed only by the very first film. Beyond simply paying tribute to the original, Jackson’s version used incredible visual effects to bring Kong to life as a believable character and create a realistic world. The film also delivers thrilling action, such as the memorable fight between Kong and three giant dinosaurs.
What’s New on Tubi?
Tubi continues to offer a strong selection of free movies, and March brought several exciting new titles to the platform. Viewers can now enjoy films like Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, White Chicks, The Bob’s Burgers Movie, John Tucker Must Die, and Ad Astra. For those who love monster movies, Tubi added several Anaconda films on March 1st, including Anaconda: Hunt For The Blood Orchid, Anaconda 3: Offspring, and Anacondas: Trail Of Blood.
