The world of Lord of the Rings is returning to cinemas, and some beloved characters will be back too. It’s been more than ten years since the last live-action Middle-earth film, and the story seemed to conclude with The Hobbit movies. While we’ve revisited the world through the Prime Video series The Rings of Power and the animated film War of the Rohirrim, now a new live-action movie, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, will bring the saga back to its roots.
Andy Serkis will direct a new prequel film set during the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. The story focuses on Aragorn and Gandalf’s pursuit of Gollum, who is also being hunted by Sauron’s forces. Serkis will also reprise his role as Gollum, and Ian McKellen is likely to return as Gandalf. However, there’s speculation that Viggo Mortensen may not return as Aragorn, with Leo Woodall potentially taking over the role. Recently, Elijah Wood spoke with The Times UK and, while not directly confirming his involvement, strongly hinted that he will return as Frodo Baggins.
Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed, Ian hinted at the possibility of a new film back in August. I can’t say anything for sure until it’s announced, but I’m very excited about it. It’s always a bit worrying when talk of new movies in a world like Middle-earth surfaces, as fans are understandably protective of its quality. However, this story feels really good – it’s exciting and has a great sense of the original team reuniting. I’m just really looking forward to it.
Wood hasn’t explicitly confirmed he’s in the movie, but his statements strongly suggest he is – it wouldn’t make sense otherwise. He went on to talk about potentially returning, and explained his motivation, especially given that McKellen wants to reprise his role because he doesn’t want anyone else to play it.
I understand completely. I wouldn’t want anyone else to play Frodo as long as I’m able to act. And I realize how enjoyable it will be to watch – like seeing Gandalf’s hat turn around on screen. I’m a fan myself and I’m really looking forward to seeing how the whole project turns out.
What Elijah Wood’s Frodo Return Means For The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum

Everyone probably assumes Wood will return, but the more interesting question is how important Frodo’s role will be. He doesn’t seem to fit into the main storyline—he won’t be joining Aragorn to search for Gollum, and he’ll likely need to stay in the Shire to remain consistent with the established story.
It makes the most sense for Wood to have a brief appearance, perhaps at the beginning and end of the story at Bag End. This would clearly establish the story’s place in the timeline and allow Frodo to be connected to the events without significantly altering his character arc.
This would create a natural opportunity for interactions between him and Gandalf, aligning with hints that they’ll be collaborating again. The film could also revisit the Shire periodically to give Frodo a more substantial part, although it’s unclear what his involvement would be in that scenario.
Elijah Wood returning as Frodo aligns perfectly with the film’s overall strategy. It’s clearly an effort to recapture the magic of the original trilogy by bringing back familiar faces – not just the actors, but also the original creative team including Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, who are all producing. The film is also revisiting well-known events, leaning heavily on nostalgia to win back audiences after the disappointing performance of War of the Rohirrim. Whether this approach will be successful remains to be seen, but Wood’s involvement is likely a positive step.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to hit theaters on December 17th, 2027.
