Elijah Wood will be playing Frodo Baggins until the wheels fall off—if he has his way.
While it hasn’t been officially announced, the actor famous for playing Frodo Baggins in the original Lord of the Rings movies has stated he wants to be the only one to ever play the character, including in the new film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
I was so glad to read in The Sunday Times recently that Elijah Wood, at 45, feels the same way I do – he wouldn’t want anyone else taking on the role of Frodo as long as he’s around and able to do it himself! It’s just wonderful to hear that he’s so connected to the character.
Elijah Wood recently addressed speculation that Leo Woodall might replace Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn in the upcoming film. However, Wood isn’t alone in feeling protective of their Lord of the Rings character. His co-star, Sir Ian McKellen, felt similarly and reprised his role as Gandalf in The Hunt for Gollum to ensure no one else played the part.
“I understand how people are excited about this,” Elijah said. He then talked about whether he’d be in the new movie, explaining, “It hasn’t been officially confirmed, but Ian hinted at it last August at a fan event.”
The Yellowjackets actor hinted that he’s likely to return for another film. While he can’t confirm anything officially yet, he expressed excitement about the possibility.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new film, The Hunt for Gollum, will take place chronologically between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies. Peter Jackson, the director of the original films, will produce, and Andy Serkis—best known for playing Gollum—will be directing this time.

Elijah is optimistic that the upcoming movie, scheduled for release in December 2027, will please dedicated fans, particularly with Peter and Andy involved in the project.
He admitted it’s always a bit stressful when new movies set in a beloved world like Middle-earth are announced, as fans naturally want to ensure the story stays true to its roots. However, he described this particular story as enjoyable and exciting, saying it felt like a welcome reunion.
“I also know how exciting that moment will be – seeing Gandalf’s hat turn around in the cinema,” the former Green Street actor said. “As a fan myself, I’m really looking forward to seeing everything come together.”
The fantasy movie’s release is delayed, but you can still find out about other exciting films coming out this year by continuing to read.
