The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has adapted many of Marvel’s most famous stories, but it continues to overlook a major plotline hinted at in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. While there’s a huge amount of MCU content for fans to enjoy – covering key storylines, character backgrounds, and mysteries – the history of one crucial character has never been fully explained.
With Avengers: Endgame, the initial storyline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) – known as the Infinity Saga – came to an end. The current phase, the Multiverse Saga, hasn’t spent much time resolving plot points from the MCU’s first three phases. Instead, it’s been largely focused on introducing new characters and exploring the multiverse. Now, the MCU is starting to incorporate characters from the X-Men films originally produced by FOX, but one character’s story still lacks a complete explanation.
The MCU Still Needs To Show Thanos’ Origin Story

Thanos served as the central villain throughout the Multiverse Saga, first appearing in 2012’s The Avengers and gradually becoming a more significant threat before taking center stage in Infinity War. By the time audiences meet him, Thanos has already begun his mission to wipe out half of all life, having collected one of the Infinity Stones and gathered his elite group, the Black Order. While films like Guardians of the Galaxy and flashbacks in Infinity War offered some insight into his past, much of Thanos’s backstory remains untold and deserves further exploration in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In Infinity War, we learn that Thanos was born on the planet Titan, which suffered from severe overpopulation. He proposed killing half of the population to solve the problem, but his idea was rejected, and he was exiled. As Titan fell apart, Thanos decided to implement his plan across the entire universe, seeing the planet’s destruction as proof that he was right.
Although we learn about Thanos through conversations, a movie showing his origins would be amazing. He’s a fascinating character with a unique sense of right and wrong, and exploring his past could make for a truly compelling film. Imagine a movie where Thanos tries to warn a world on the brink of destruction, but his radical ideas are rejected. It would be a tragic political thriller – a type of story the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t done before.
The movie would explore Thanos’s backstory, showing his life and motivations before he became the villain the Avengers fought. Since Thanos is already a complicated character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this story would add even more depth and nuance to his personality.
Will The MCU Ever Make A Thanos Origin Movie?

Although a movie exploring Thanos’s backstory sounds appealing, it’s unlikely Marvel will ever make one. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently focused on expanding its overall story and setting up future connections within the Multiverse Saga. A Thanos origin movie, being a prequel, wouldn’t fit into this approach, as it would tell a story about events that have already happened and wouldn’t connect to the current narrative. While potentially interesting, it would feel separate from everything else Marvel is building.
A movie focused on Thanos could really help the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some of the newer heroes haven’t become as popular as the original characters from the Infinity Saga. Thanos became incredibly popular after Infinity War, and is now one of the most recognizable figures in the franchise. Giving him his own film could generate a similar level of excitement as a movie starring Iron Man or Captain America.
A new movie focusing on Thanos could win back fans who haven’t been engaged with the storylines after the Infinity Saga. The current Multiverse Saga hasn’t had the same impact as the original three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If the MCU struggles to regain that earlier popularity, revisiting the Infinity Saga with a Thanos-centered film could be a good solution. It could remind audiences of what made the MCU so great and encourage them to give the newer Multiverse Saga projects a chance.
