Hilary Duff Details Estrangement From Her Parents & Sister Haylie Duff

Hilary Duff’s lips aren’t sealed when it comes to her family dynamic.

The actress, known for her role in How I Met Your Father, openly discussed the complicated nature of her relationship with her parents, Bob and Susan Duff, and how it inspired the lyrics of her new song, “The Optimist,” from her album Luck… or Something.

The song was inspired by her personal experience growing up with separated parents and strained relationships with both of them. She described it as deeply painful, explaining that the need for parental care and affection doesn’t disappear with age, and that she often felt a lack of that support throughout her life.

“I don’t know if that’s the truth,” Hilary added, “but that’s how it feels.”

Hilary Duff, 38, spoke about her difficult relationship with her father, especially after her parents divorced in 2008. She shares 13-year-old Luca with her ex-husband, Mike Comrie, and has three younger children – Banks, 7, May, 4, and Townes, 22 months – with her husband, Matthew Koma. Despite trying to improve things, she says she hasn’t been able to mend their relationship.

She explained that she and her father aren’t close and rarely talk. She believes it’s very difficult to rebuild relationships after a significant family falling-out, and not everyone involved will want to try.

Hilary Duff has been going through a difficult time with her sister, Haylie Duff, lately, and their strained relationship actually inspired her new song, “We Don’t Talk.” She’s realized that having a complicated relationship with a sibling is more common than people think.

Hilary shared on the podcast that she’s noticed more and more people going through similar experiences. She explained that making this new album meant being honest about her own life, even though it was difficult. After a decade, she felt the only reason to create music was to confront what she’d been through, and that’s what she aimed to do with this record.

While Hilary deals with ongoing family issues, check out these other celebrities who’ve opened up about their famous disagreements…

In January 2024, Bobby (the second person from the left in the picture) spoke about rumors of a disagreement with Tan (in the middle). This came two months after Bobby announced he was leaving Queer Eye after being on the show for eight seasons.

He told Vanity Fair that he and Tan are doing okay despite a personal issue. He emphasized that the situation was between the two of them, unrelated to their work on the show, and wasn’t a romantic matter.

In March 2024, Tan addressed claims that he tried to get his friend Jeremiah Brent to replace Bobby on the show Queer Eye.

Netflix and the production team held a thorough search for the right actor. I didn’t recommend my friend for the role, but they ultimately landed it because they were the most qualified. I want to be clear that I didn’t help them get the part by sabotaging anyone else, as I shared on Instagram.

Let me tell you, as someone who’s seen a lot of celebrity interactions, I was a bit surprised by what happened last September! I was playing a game called ‘Stir the Pot’ with my daughter, Kelly, on TopMob News, and the conversation turned to celebrities I’ve met. I ended up saying that Ashton Kutcher, from ‘That ’70s Show,’ was honestly the rudest celebrity I’ve ever encountered. I just found him to be incredibly disrespectful – I even described him as a ‘rude, rude, rude, rude little boy’ and a ‘dastardly little thing’ on air! It just wasn’t a pleasant experience, and I felt comfortable sharing that.

He did not respond to her remarks publicly.

Five years ago, Sharon shared with Larry King that Ashton seemed annoyed during his 2014 appearance on The Talk because she had misspoken his name.

She remembered him asking, ‘Who are you and what have you accomplished in this business?’ She responded sharply, telling him, ‘Don’t underestimate me, because I’ll completely overwhelm you.’ She finished by saying, ‘You have no idea what you’re up against, young man.’

In August 2022, Cassadee Pope and Maren Morris clashed with Brittany Aldean, the wife of country singer Jason Aldean, after Brittany posted a video on Instagram. In the video, she thanked her parents for not allowing her to transition genders during a phase where she preferred traditionally masculine interests, adding that she now enjoys a feminine lifestyle.

In a 2022 TikTok trend, JoJo Siwa called Candace Cameron Bure the “rudest” celebrity she’d met, explaining that Bure had once declined to pose for a picture with her on a red carpet, which Siwa found hurtful. Shortly after, Cameron Bure apologized, saying she regretted turning Siwa down when she was eleven years old and felt bad about it.

Candace and the other person resolved their differences. However, when asked months later if her network, Great American Family, would ever feature same-sex couples as the main characters in its holiday movies, she stated that it wouldn’t, explaining that the network would continue to focus on traditional marriage.

JoJo, who publicly shared they are part of the LGBTQ+ community in 2021, said on Instagram that the actress’s comment was offensive and caused pain to many people.

In June 2021, Courtney Love claimed Olivia Rodrigo had copied the album cover art for her band Hole in a promotional photo without giving credit. Olivia responded with a simple, “Love u and live through this sooooo much.” Courtney then playfully replied, “Olivia – you’re welcome! My favorite florist is in Notting Hill, London! DM me for details! I look forward to reading your note [winking face emoji].”

While on Watch What Happens Live, the Happy Days actor explained the reason for his difficult relationship with the Forrest Gump star while filming the 1989 movie Turner & Hooch.

I directed the movie for thirteen days, and then Jeff Katzenberg, the producer, called me into his office and told me to pack up and go home, as I had everything I needed.

Winkler and Hanks’ dog seemed to hit it off. “I really loved that dog,” Winkler said, “We got along great.”

He also refused to admit if he’s even seen the flick.

“You know what you did!”

Anyone who watched The Hills likely remembers that famous line from Lauren during the third season’s first episode. The drama between them started when Heidi began dating her future husband, Spencer Pratt, and escalated when Lauren claimed Heidi and Spencer spread a false rumor about her and her boyfriend at the time, Jason Wahler, alleging they had made a sex tape.

Tyrese and Dwayne Johnson had a public falling out in 2017, starting with an Instagram post where Tyrese criticized Dwayne after the release of Fast & Furious 9 was delayed until April 2020. On the same day, a spin-off movie featuring Dwayne and Jason Statham, set in the Fast & Furious universe, was announced with a 2019 release date. A month later, Tyrese said he would leave Fast 9 if Dwayne was still involved.

Tyrese recently discussed the conflict with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, telling Van Lathan on The Red Pill podcast that they still haven’t spoken directly, though he hopes to. He mentioned he did talk to one of Johnson’s producing partners, but not Johnson himself.

Tyrese admitted he shouldn’t have publicly shared frustrations on behalf of others connected to the franchise, saying it was unprofessional and a mistake on his part. He explained he was the only one who spoke out, and he takes responsibility for that.

No more bad blood here.

Taylor Swift and Katy Perry famously had a long-running feud, rumored to have even sparked Taylor’s song “Bad Blood.” The conflict, which began with issues over a shared backup dancer and competing concert tours, ended when Katy sent Taylor an actual olive branch as a peace offering before Taylor’s Reputation Tour began.

Taylor shared a video on Instagram explaining she found a real olive branch in her dressing room, saying it meant a lot to her.

Taylor captioned the video, “Thank you Katy.”

For years, Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker, stars of Sex and the City, dismissed rumors of a disagreement. However, speculation resurfaced when Kim chose not to participate in a third movie and later made comments about Sarah Jessica Parker that many found surprising.

During a September 2017 episode of Watch What Happens Live, Andy Cohen asked Sarah Jessica Parker how she felt about Kim Cattrall telling Piers Morgan they had only ever been colleagues, not friends.

She was deeply upset, saying she felt heartbroken. She and I had talked about it all week because she didn’t remember things the same way and found the situation really distressing.

It’s definitely sad, but I believe what truly connects us is the shared experience we all had. It started as a professional project, but over the years, it became something deeply personal. I hope that those years of working on something special, and the connections we built, will outweigh any recent disagreements. It was a real privilege to be a part of it.

And though they didn’t film scenes together, Kim did make a small appearance on And Just Like That.

I’ve been following both Elton John and Madonna for years, and it’s honestly wild to me that their rivalry started way back in 2004! I remember reading about the uproar when Elton accepted his award at the Q Awards that year. He basically called Madonna out for lip-syncing during her concerts, saying something like, ‘Seriously, best live act? No way!’ He was pretty blunt, even saying he thought anyone who fakes singing live when people are paying good money to see a show deserved… well, a harsh punishment. It was a shocking thing to hear him say, and it definitely kicked off a long-lasting feud!

The actress, formerly on Grey’s Anatomy, caused a disagreement with the show’s creator in 2008 when she asked to not be considered for an Emmy Award. She explained that she didn’t think the storylines she was given were strong enough to deserve a nomination.

I’ll never forget when Shonda talked about Katherine’s choice on Oprah’s show back in 2012. She admitted it hurt, but honestly, she wasn’t totally shocked. She said something that really stuck with me: ‘When people show you who they are, believe them.’ It’s become a real guiding principle for me, and it’s honestly helped me so much over the years.

The fight between Nicki and Cardi at the Harper’s Bazaar Icon party during New York Fashion Week became a major news story. A month later, Cardi explained what started the argument with Nicki.

Cardi B recently told W magazine that someone has been repeatedly criticizing her. She explained that she’d talked to this person twice and thought they had resolved the issue, but the negativity continued.

The conflict truly escalated when Cardi B noticed Nicki Minaj had seemingly liked, then unliked, a tweet criticizing Cardi’s skills as a mother – something Nicki claims she didn’t do.

Cardi B explained that she chose to be with her daughter instead of pursuing a very profitable Bruno Mars tour. She emphasized how much she loves her daughter and considers herself a great mother. She found it frustrating that someone without children would criticize her behavior, and she pointed out that opportunities to meet artists casually are rare – she wasn’t going to get another chance encounter like that one.

The conflict between Kanye West and Taylor Swift began in 2009 when he interrupted her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards. They eventually reconciled and became friends, but their relationship fell apart in 2016 after Kanye released his song “Famous,” which mentioned Taylor by name.

Just before the Grammy Awards in February 2025, Kanye West began following Taylor Swift on Instagram. He didn’t offer any explanation for this action, and Taylor Swift didn’t publicly acknowledge it.

“I don’t know her.”

The rumored rivalry between Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez began in 2003 during a German TV interview. When asked about Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey famously said, “I don’t know her.”
