Disney has a habit of reimagining its beloved animated films as live-action movies, and this strategy has proven very successful. Four of these remakes—Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Alice in Wonderland, and Lilo & Stitch—each earned over $1 billion worldwide. Disney has also created films focused on iconic villains, like Maleficent and Cruella. Interestingly, while Disney recently decided against a live-action version of Robin Hood, they’ve now approved a movie that’s been in the works for more than ten years.
Disney is moving forward with a live-action movie about Tinker Bell, currently titled Tink. According to Deadline, the project has been in the works since 2015, but this new version will be written and executive produced by Liz Heldens and Bridget Carpenter, who previously collaborated on Friday Night Lights. Gary Marsh, a former executive at Disney Television, will also serve as an executive producer.
Disney Has Seen Success With Live-Action Movies Based Onn Animated Characters

Tinker Bell made her debut in Disney’s Peter Pan in 1953, but over time, she’s become even more popular than Peter Pan himself. This is largely thanks to young girls who loved Disney animated films. Unlike traditional Disney Princesses, Tinker Bell was a spirited and independent character, and her playful attitude resonated with a whole generation. Since 2008, she’s starred in six of her own animated movies, with the most recent one released in 2015.
Reese Witherspoon was originally cast to star as Tinker Bell in a movie called Tink, but the project was put on hold when Disney got new management. In 2023, Tara Shahidi, known for her role in Black-ish, played Tinker Bell in the live-action film Peter Pan & Wendy. Currently, it’s unknown who will play Tinker Bell in Tink, or what the movie will be about.
There’s a good chance a new villain origin story will do well. The 2014 film Maleficent was a huge hit, earning $759.8 million and leading to a sequel. Starring Angelina Jolie as Maleficent and Elle Fanning as Aurora, it retold the classic Sleeping Beauty tale. More recently, in 2021, Emma Stone starred as Cruella de Vil in Cruella, which explored the villain’s backstory and performed reasonably well despite the challenges of the post-COVID box office.
Disney has consistently found success by reimagining its classic animated films with live-action versions. Even a seemingly unusual choice like Lilo & Stitch earned over $1 billion last year, and a live-action Moana is on the way. However, reports suggest this new film might go straight to Disney+ instead of theaters, which could potentially impact its budget and overall production quality. Despite this, the success of films like the Zombies series shows there’s potential for Tinker Bell to star in future movies if this one performs well.
