Netflix is adding a new survival horror film called Apex to its lineup. Directed by Baltasar Kormákur, the movie stars Charlize Theron as Sasha, a woman seeking to cope with grief by pushing herself to the limit with extreme sports like rock climbing and kayaking in the Australian outback. Her journey for peace turns into a terrifying struggle for survival when she’s targeted by Ben (Taron Egerton), a dangerous serial killer who hunts people. Apex aims to be a realistic and suspenseful thriller, using the harshness and isolation of the wilderness to create a truly frightening experience.
Fans are getting their first look at the intense new survival thriller, Apex, thanks to an exclusive image released by Empire Magazine. The photo shows Sasha in a desperate situation, being pulled from a river by a bear trap connected to a chain. Ben is seen pulling the chain with a disturbing smile, immediately establishing the dangerous relationship between the two characters. This glimpse confirms that Netflix is preparing a genuinely terrifying and gripping film.
Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton Were “Dragged Through Hell” for Apex

The intense on-screen fight for survival in Apex mirrors the physically demanding experience the actors went through while filming. Director Kormákur deliberately exposed the cast to the difficult conditions of the Australian outback to create a truly believable sense of desperation. He believes the filming location significantly impacts the story, telling Empire Magazine that the environment itself becomes a character. Kormákur prioritized real, practical challenges over relying on digital effects, wanting the fear to feel grounded in physical reality. As he puts it, he pushes the actors to their limits because they need to genuinely feel what their characters are going through.
Although director Kormákur’s methods were extremely demanding, the actors said the difficult shoot ultimately created a very positive and fulfilling experience. Charlize Theron specifically appreciated how immersive the process was, explaining that Kormákur always led by example and never asked the cast to do anything he wasn’t willing to do himself. She stated he consistently took on the most challenging tasks first, and that he understood her capabilities, pushing her beyond her self-imposed limits.
Egerton agreed, recalling a particularly difficult stunt that really tested his limits. He admitted he’s usually not afraid of heights, but being suspended on a wire was surprisingly challenging. Director Baltazar asked if he’d be willing to do a free fall, and despite being terrified, Egerton agreed. He shouted ‘Action!’ and plummeted, letting out a loud scream. When the director yelled ‘Cut!’, the crew applauded, which Egerton described as a genuinely rewarding moment.
Details from the making of Apex suggest it will be a truly tense and thrilling experience, especially for fans of survival thrillers. The filmmakers put the actors through real challenges – like working at dangerous heights, in freezing water, and while physically exhausted – to make the on-screen fatigue feel authentic. Director Kormákur’s commitment to capturing these genuine physical and emotional struggles will ensure the story’s weight and fear come across powerfully in the finished film.
Apex is scheduled to be released on Netflix on April 24, 2026.
