Shinji Mikami, the creator of several popular and highly-rated games, had already left Tango Gameworks before the studio ultimately closed. According to a recent report from GamesRadar, former Tango Gameworks producer Masato Kimura revealed in an interview last year with Japanese recruitment site Nidan Jump that he had been working with Mikami on a new project.
Shinji Mikami recently started a new studio called KAMUY, where he plans to create smaller games with quicker development times. Meanwhile, Tetsuya Kimura has revealed he’s collaborating with Mikami on a project at Kimura’s studio, Unbound. Unbound is dedicated to supporting Mikami’s games, utilizing both experienced and new developers in small teams.
Although specifics haven’t been shared yet, Unbound’s website includes a curious message that could be connected to a project by Mikami.
He builds his world around himself, a habit that’s always been true. He surrounds himself with things he loves, and nothing can change him. People often tell me I’m a little different, but I’ve learned to accept it. It’s not that he lives in his own world, but rather a world without limits.
If you asked him to describe himself, he’d likely say he finds numbers fascinating because limitations feel like a challenge. Overall, he’s doing well and doesn’t seem to have any major issues.
So, everyone knows Shinji Mikami started a new studio called KAMUY a while back, but honestly, he’s been super quiet about it. The only time I’ve really seen him say anything since he left Tango Gameworks was back in May 2024, and it was just a simple “Sad” about the studio closing. It’s been radio silence ever since, which is kinda weird for a legend like him.
Shinji Mikami has had a long and successful career in video games. He began at Capcom in 1990 and first gained widespread recognition for directing the original Resident Evil in 1996. He also contributed to games like Dino Crisis. Later, in the early 2000s, he revisited the Resident Evil series, leading the remake for the GameCube and the highly praised Resident Evil 4.
During his career, Mikami also explored different types of games, including his work on God Hand. In 2006, he established PlatinumGames and later directed the fast-paced, action-packed shooter Vanquish, released in 2010. He then founded Tango Gameworks and directed their first game, the horror title The Evil Within, which came out in 2014.
Beyond directing, Mikami also held various roles on other projects from the studio. He was executive producer on titles like The Evil Within 2, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and Tango Gameworks’ last game, 2023’s Hi-Fi Rush. He’s also contributed as a writer for Killer7, a producer on Resident Evil 2, and executive producer for Devil May Cry, showcasing his versatility across different projects.
Meanwhile, some ex-employees of Tango Gameworks are starting a new studio together. They haven’t shared what games they’re working on yet, but they said their logo was created to look crafted and personal.
