As a big Marvel fan, I was a little worried about how they’d handle the Sentry in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, but Lewis Pullman, who plays him, seems really confident about it. He first appeared as Bob, also known as the Sentry and the Void, in Thunderbolts, and quickly showed he’s one of the MCU’s strongest characters. He’ll be back for Doomsday this December, teaming up with Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova and David Harbour as Red Guardian again. But get this – they’re adding a ton more heroes to the mix, like a couple dozen of them! It sounds like it’s going to be an epic team-up.
The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, already boasts a huge cast, bringing together actors from previous Marvel films like the original Avengers, Fantastic Four, Black Panther, and even the X-Men. While this is exciting, there’s a risk the movie could become overly reliant on cameos and nostalgic moments instead of a strong story. However, in a recent interview with Esquire, actor Bill Pullman assured fans that the film won’t just be a series of quick appearances, and that each character will have a meaningful role.
The Russo brothers are excellent at giving every character a meaningful role, ensuring no one is just a background presence. They understood the importance of utilizing the incredible talent of the entire cast and created many exciting and unexpected pairings. Fans will love seeing these combinations play out – it’s fun to imagine ‘what if’ scenarios, and the movie delivers on a lot of those hopes and dreams.
Lewis Pullman’s Promise Is Exciting For Avengers: Doomsday
Team-ups between heroes are always a highlight of these films, but they need to be handled carefully. Lately, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been using cameos and bringing back familiar actors more and more, seemingly to increase ticket sales (like in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Deadpool & Wolverine). However, these appearances haven’t been supported by strong character development or compelling stories. The plot has become secondary to simply including these cameos, and that’s a problem.
Whether Doomsday can avoid feeling overly reliant on familiar elements remains to be seen. The return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, so soon after his character’s retirement from the MCU, already leans into nostalgia. However, the Russo Brothers proved with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame that they excel at directing large ensemble films, giving each actor and character a meaningful role that contributes to the overall story.
Those earlier films, while still large in scope, felt like a natural ending to the Infinity Saga. They brought heroes together, but didn’t heavily depend on resurrecting characters. This makes the challenge for Doomsday even greater – it needs to justify bringing back so many familiar faces and make those returns feel meaningful. However, comments from the filmmakers suggest they’re aware of this and are working to strike the right balance.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters on December 18th, 2026.
