From the writer of The Martian comes Project Hail Mary ….
Andy Weir, the author of ‘The Martian’, has a new novel called ‘Project Hail Mary’. Similar to his previous work, it features a solitary protagonist cut off from humanity. Given this pattern, many are predicting his next book will be about Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.
The Project Hail Mary story
The film centers around Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), a former science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship, far from Earth, to discover his entire crew is dead. Through flashbacks, we learn he was chosen for a critical space mission due to a unique theory he proposed. Eva Stratt (Sandra Huller), the head of the space program, saw potential in his unconventional ideas because a devastating virus is killing the sun and threatening all planets except one. They desperately need Grace to understand what’s happening and find a way to reverse the crisis.
Grace was sent into space on a vital mission: to collect a virus that could save both Earth and the Sun. However, he quickly finds himself stranded, alone on a spaceship he can’t control, and lost in the vastness of space with no way to return home.
The mission appeared to be a failure until he met another spaceship, also carrying only one survivor—a rock! But this wasn’t just any rock; it was a sentient being capable of moving on its own. He named his new companion Rocky, and the two formed an unexpected bond. Both were stranded far from home, determined to save the universe from a deadly virus.
Who’s behind it all?
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller return to live-action filmmaking with this project, their first since being removed from ‘Solo – A Star Wars Story’. They’ve since regained critical acclaim with the highly successful animated ‘Spider-Verse’ films – the first of which earned them an Oscar – and the equally well-received ‘The Mitchells vs. the Machines’.
Project Hail Mary is a grand adventure carried by Ryan Gosling and his surprising connection with a computer-generated alien lifeform. The heart of the movie lies in the unlikely friendship that develops between them, offering both humorous and touching moments as their bond grows.
This is a grand, though lengthy, film. Ryan Gosling is charming on screen, and the stunning visual effects create a powerfully isolating and believable cosmic setting. Despite its sprawling nature, it’s a moving and important film best experienced on IMAX.
