Good news for fans of One Piece! All episodes of the live-action show’s second season are now available on Netflix. While the series is still overseen by the original creator, Eiichiro Oda, this adaptation has made some changes to the story. One major surprise comes early on with a cameo appearance by a character who wasn’t originally scheduled to appear until much later in the series. This unexpected arrival has significant consequences, not just for the main character Luffy, but for the entire world of One Piece.
Please be aware that this discussion contains major spoilers for One Piece Season 2, Episode 1. The new season kicks off with Luffy and his crew arriving in Loguetown! While there’s a noticeable change – the character Bartolomeo has a significantly expanded role – that’s just the beginning. Towards the end of the episode, we see Monkey D. Dragon by himself after his fight with Smoker. He doesn’t stay alone for long, though, as Sabo, a key character in the series, unexpectedly appears much earlier than fans anticipated. You can see Sabo in the episode below.

Who is Sabo?

Netflix hasn’t confirmed who will play Sabo, or if this actor will continue in the role. Although Sabo appeared briefly, his absence for the rest of the second season suggests his return isn’t imminent. To figure out when Luffy’s brother might reappear, it’s helpful to look closely at Sabo’s character and his importance to the Straw Hat crew.
Sabo is first introduced as a child around episode 500 of the One Piece anime. He reappears much later as an adult in episode 663, during the Dressrosa Arc, where he fights the villain Donquixote Doflamingo. Though not related by blood, Sabo became brothers with Luffy and Ace, sharing a strong bond. While Luffy’s rubbery abilities come from his Devil Fruit, Sabo’s powers are more similar to Ace’s.
Sabo isn’t just second-in-command of the Revolutionary Army—he also possesses the power of a Devil Fruit. By eating the Mera Mera no Mi, he gained the ability to become and control fire. This power has been incredibly helpful as he works with his father to fight against the World Government.
It’s hard to say when Sabo might appear in the live-action One Piece. The Netflix series is generally following the manga and anime, but the creators are willing to make changes as needed. With Xolo Maridueña cast as Ace for season three, a reunion with his brothers is possible, perhaps in Alabasta. While season three doesn’t have a release date yet, filming has already begun.
