5 Years Ago, Star Wars Finally Told the Deep Cut Origin of the Best Sequel Trilogy Character

The Star Wars franchise has faced challenges in recent years. While the TV shows have been successful, the movies haven’t performed as well since the release of The Force Awakens in 2015. Disney’s attempt to create a single, consistent storyline for all Star Wars content has also struggled, with novels and comics often trying to fill gaps and explain inconsistencies in the sequel trilogy. This has been an ongoing issue for almost ten years.

For example, it’s been five years since Star Wars bothered to fully explain the backstory of its most popular sequel trilogy character. What’s really disappointing isn’t the complexity of that backstory, but the fact that many fans still aren’t even aware it exists, almost ten years later.

Star Wars Comics Revealed How Poe Dameron’s Parents Met

Five years ago, in 2021, Marvel released the twelfth issue of its current Star Wars comic book series. This special issue, titled “Reflections on the Lost!”, celebrated the book’s first anniversary and featured a heartwarming conversation between Leia Organa and Kes Dameron, Poe Dameron’s father, as they reminisced about how they each found love.

Kes Dameron’s story begins on the planet Galator III, where he was watching crestracing – a thrilling water sport. He was captivated by a particularly brave racer who narrowly won a dangerous race. Intrigued, Kes sought her out, and to his surprise, she asked him out for a drink.

Since Poe Dameron appeared in The Force Awakens, the Star Wars universe has been expanding the backstory of his parents, Kes and Shara Dameron. In 2015, a comic series called Star Wars: Shattered Dimensions (written by Greg Rucka with art by Marco Checchetto and Andres Mossa) was released, showing Kes as a Rebel sergeant and Shara as a pilot shortly after the Battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi.

Over the years, various Star Wars comics, short stories, and novels have delved into the lives of Kes and Shara, portraying them as heroes who gave up their youth to fight the Empire. By 2021, with the release of Star Wars #12, it felt surprising that it had been five years without learning the story of how they became the legendary couple we know.

Many Star Wars fans are still unaware of the full story behind Poe Dameron and his parents. Like other characters in the sequel trilogy, Poe’s story wasn’t fully explored. While he was a central figure in The Last Jedi, he took a backseat in The Rise of Skywalker and didn’t have a defining moment to cement his place as a Star Wars hero. Although some hope Oscar Isaac will reprise the role in future projects, fans will probably need to look beyond the main films and explore other Star Wars content to learn more about Poe and his family.
