Sony entered the competitive world of video game consoles in 1995 with the original PlayStation, quickly becoming a key player. Since then, they’ve consistently released new and improved consoles, including handheld versions. Over the years, Sony has launched seven main PlayStation consoles (excluding variations like Pro or Slim). We’ve reviewed each one, ranking them based on the quality of their games, how well-liked they were, and their overall success.
7) PlayStation Vita
Sony struggled with its previous handheld consoles because they used unique, proprietary media formats. The PlayStation Vita, released in 2012, was their attempt to fix this, featuring a 5-inch OLED touchscreen and controls similar to other PlayStation consoles. However, the Vita faced tough competition from the growing popularity of tablets and mobile games on smartphones, leading to estimated sales of under 16 million units. While it had a good selection of downloadable games, many fans disliked the high cost of its proprietary memory cards. Ultimately, the Vita wasn’t a commercial success and is likely to be Sony’s last dedicated handheld gaming device for the foreseeable future.
6) PlayStation 3
It’s tough to rank PlayStation consoles because Sony consistently delivers great games. The PlayStation 3, launched in 2007 to rival the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii, was a huge success, selling over 87 million units. However, it was initially expensive because it was built with powerful, complex technology. This high cost is the primary reason the PS3 is considered Sony’s least popular console. Later, the Slim and Super Slim versions fixed some problems and made the system more affordable.
5) PlayStation Portable
The PlayStation Portable (PSP), Sony’s first handheld gaming console, launched in 2005. It was more powerful and advanced than its main rival, the Nintendo DS, and offered a wide range of high-quality games. Over its lifespan, the PSP sold over 80 million units. One common complaint was its use of Universal Media Discs (UMDs), which were small discs in protective cases that were prone to breaking. Despite this, the PSP was a strong, enjoyable console with a fantastic game selection.
4) PlayStation 5
When the PlayStation 5 launched in 2020, it quickly became incredibly difficult to find due to resellers, often called ‘scalpers,’ buying them up and selling them at much higher prices. Sony offered two versions: a standard model with a disc drive and a cheaper, digital-only version that could only play games downloaded online. The PS5 was a very powerful console when it came out – a hallmark of Sony’s PlayStation line – and its impressive graphics and performance made it extremely popular. While Sony has sold around 92 million PS5s, sales numbers are currently lower than those of the PlayStation 4.
3) PlayStation 4
The PlayStation 4 launched in 2013 and quickly became a major competitor to consoles like the Xbox One, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch. It was a groundbreaking system, selling over 117 million units worldwide. The PS4 boasted a fantastic library of games, which contributed to its success. Sony later released a more powerful “Pro” version with improved processing and graphics capabilities to handle 4K gaming. The PlayStation 4 remained available until March 2024, when Sony stopped its production to make way for the next generation of consoles.
2) PlayStation
When the original PlayStation launched in 1994, it completely revolutionized the gaming world. It quickly surpassed its rivals, the Nintendo 64 and Sega Saturn, becoming the dominant console of its generation. The PlayStation was particularly known for its impressive 3D graphics, which were a step above the competition, and it introduced many beloved game series and titles, such as Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and Final Fantasy VII. As Sony’s first foray into consoles, the PlayStation was a huge success, selling over 100 million units during its lifespan.
1) PlayStation 2
The PlayStation 2, released by Sony in 2000, became the best-selling game console ever, with over 160 million units sold. Despite competition from consoles like the Xbox, Dreamcast, and GameCube, the PlayStation 2 easily surpassed them thanks to its powerful hardware and impressive game selection – a library of nearly 11,000 titles. It was a significant upgrade over previous consoles and its rivals, notably offering backward compatibility, a feature none of its competitors could match.
