Bungie, the studio behind Destiny 2, has received criticism for how it removed older content from the game. With their new game, Marathon, they aim to do things differently. Creative director Julia Nardin explained in an interview with Space.com that they want Marathon to be a game players can enjoy at any time without feeling like they’ve missed out. While Marathon will be updated with new stories and content through seasons, Bungie says they’ve learned from past mistakes with Destiny 2 and want to create an experience that continuously adds to the game rather than taking things away.
Players can join the extraction shooter at any time without fear of missing out on key story content. Questlines will continue to be available through updates, ensuring everyone can earn achievements and complete their collections at their own pace.
As a gamer, what I’m hearing about Marathon is really cool. The developers are building it so that no matter when you start playing, you can jump into all the main story quests and unlock achievements – basically, everything stays relevant. They’re planning to add more content over time, based on what players like and how things are going, but they already have a good idea of where they want the story to go and what kind of stuff we’ll be discovering next. It sounds like they’re aiming for a game that constantly expands and keeps things fresh, no matter how long you’ve been playing.
According to Nardin, the story of Marathon will unfold as players explore and scavenge a deserted colony within its extraction shooter gameplay. While quests will drive much of the narrative, the game will also build its world and lore through details found in item descriptions, text files, and audio logs.
According to Nardin, the game focuses on exploring a deserted colony, and the story revolves around uncovering the fate of its inhabitants. Players will discover what happened on Tau Ceti IV by finding and reading text files and listening to audio logs scattered throughout the colony.
The contracts you accept from groups involved in the Marathon expedition don’t just offer rewards – they actually lead you and your crew on the journey itself, prompting you to explore the world while seeking profit and building relationships. And yes, Durandal returns, alongside a host of new characters – both human and artificial intelligence, and everything in between!
Bungie, the developer of Destiny 2, first started removing older content – a practice they call ‘vaulting’ – with the 2020 expansion, Beyond Light. This expansion added a new story set on Jupiter’s moon Europa, but it also meant taking away the original game’s campaign, as well as the Curse of Osiris, Warmind, and Forsaken expansions. Several areas like Titan, Mars, and the Tangled Shore were also removed, along with various raids and strikes.
Marathon is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
