Broly, a powerful character first appearing in Dragon Ball Z 33 years ago, recently received a significant update in Dragon Ball Super. While the Dragon Ball series is known for its memorable villains, many great characters have appeared only in the movies and aren’t considered part of the main storyline. These movie-exclusive villains were popular with fans, but they were never included in the anime or manga’s official canon.
Things changed with the release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly. The movie reimagined Broly, the villain from the earlier trilogy, giving him a complete overhaul. Akira Toriyama, the creator of the Dragon Ball series, crafted a new backstory and design for Broly and integrated him into the main timeline, pitting him against significantly more powerful versions of Goku and Vegeta. Even after 33 years, the original Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan remains impressive, even alongside this reboot.
Broly Made His Dragon Ball Z Debut 33 Years Ago
This week marks the 33rd anniversary of the theatrical release of Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan in Japan, which originally premiered on March 6th, 1993. The film came to the United States a decade later on DVD and VHS, and Broly quickly became a popular character in the Dragon Ball series. While not initially part of Akira Toriyama’s original story, Broly felt like a natural fit within the existing narrative of Goku and Vegeta, serving as a significant Saiyan villain after a long absence.
Goku and Vegeta discovered their Super Saiyan forms were significantly weaker compared to Broly’s incredible power. Broly’s uncontrolled, furious rage made him far stronger than anyone they’d ever fought. Even fighting together wasn’t enough to overcome the difference in their strength. Ultimately, they had to combine all of their energy into Goku – a technique used again in the future – giving him the power needed to defeat Broly with a final, decisive attack.
Broly proved to be a very popular villain, leading to two sequels: Dragon Ball Z: Broly – Second Coming and Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly. However, these films weren’t as well-received as the original. They diminished Broly’s impact, and in the final installment, the character wasn’t even truly himself – Goku and Vegeta weren’t even required to defeat him. He had become disconnected from the main Dragon Ball storyline. It wasn’t until many years later that Broly was reimagined and reintroduced.
Dragon Ball Rebooted Broly for a Reason

Broly returned in 2018 as the main character in Dragon Ball Super: Broly. This movie introduced a reimagined version of Broly, created by Akira Toriyama. While still a powerful, rage-fueled Super Saiyan and a formidable opponent for Goku and Vegeta, this new Broly was stronger, matching the increased power levels Goku and Vegeta achieved during the Tournament of Power.
Broly’s backstory has been significantly altered; he’s now portrayed as a solitary child driven to anger, and currently serves as a training partner for Goku and Vegeta on Beerus’ planet. This is a far cry from his original depiction, though the initial version of the character remains compelling. Despite being rooted in the design aesthetic of the early 1990s – largely due to his powerful and rebellious nature – that very quality has allowed Broly to remain popular and relevant even compared to other entries in the series.
This movie perfectly captures the feel of that time period. The English dub enhances it with its music, even if Broly’s voice actor doesn’t sound as good today. It really brings back the exciting energy that made Dragon Ball Z so popular in the US. There’s something special about this original version of Broly that still hasn’t been topped, which is why people continue to compare him to the newer version. It always sparks debate among fans about which Broly is ultimately more powerful.
