Guardians of the Galaxy’s MCU Future Addressed by Marvel Stars

Once considered a huge gamble for Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy has become one of the studio’s most popular franchises thanks to three successful movies and appearances in the Avengers films. However, the future of the team is now uncertain. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 concluded the story for this version of the Guardians, with each character going their own way after a very emotional ending. Despite this, fans are hoping to see the Guardians continue in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

At Emerald City Comic-Con, several actors from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies discussed whether a fourth film might happen. Pom Klementieff, who plays Mantis, explained that the story was originally planned as a three-part series, so a fourth movie wasn’t something the cast had talked about. Michael Rooker expressed relief that the series didn’t drag on, jokingly comparing the potential outcome to the long run of The Walking Dead.

Sean Gunn shared what it would take for him to reprise his role in a potential Guardians of the Galaxy 4. He explained that it would depend on whether the filmmakers could assemble the cast and develop a script they were happy with. Even then, he added that someone else would likely already be involved in the project, making his return uncertain.

Will Guardians of the Galaxy 4 Ever Happen?

Making a fourth Guardians of the Galaxy movie would be a tough task for Marvel Studios. James Gunn, now leading DC Studios, was the driving creative force behind the first three films – he wrote and directed them all. His special combination of emotion, comedy, and action is what made those movies so beloved, and finding someone to replicate his vision wouldn’t be easy. It’s no surprise many directors hesitated to take on Guardians of the Galaxy 3 when James Gunn was briefly removed from the project.

During a recent panel, Pom Klementieff hinted that the characters from Guardians of the Galaxy might appear in future Marvel films, possibly in an Avengers movie or a larger crossover event. It seems Marvel is setting things up to make this happen. The ending of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 suggests Star-Lord will return, although Chris Pratt hasn’t officially signed on for any upcoming projects. While it’s unlikely he’ll be in Avengers: Doomsday due to previous filming commitments with The Terminal List, Pratt could potentially reprise his role in Avengers: Secret Wars.

As a huge fan of the Guardians, I think Marvel’s making a smart call by maybe not rushing into another full-blown Guardians of the Galaxy movie right away. It’s tough following James Gunn’s work, and any new film would be under a lot of pressure to live up to what came before, even with a different team. Plus, with Secret Wars seeming like a way to refresh the MCU, they might decide to move on from certain storylines. The Guardians trilogy had a perfect ending, and it really felt like a complete vision. So, honestly, it feels right to let those characters appear as part of bigger team-ups instead of forcing another solo adventure. It allows us to still see them, but without the weight of expectations and the inevitable comparisons.

While a fourth Guardians of the Galaxy movie isn’t impossible, it’s uncertain. Marvel has shown they’re willing to recast major characters like Iron Man and Captain America, which once seemed unthinkable. A new director could potentially reimagine the Guardians, but it would need to be a truly compelling vision that both respects the original films and stands on its own. Because of the high regard for James Gunn, filmmakers might be hesitant to propose a new Guardians movie, making the upcoming Secret Wars event potentially the last time we see Star-Lord and the team – it would be surprising if he didn’t participate in the battle against Doctor Doom.
