As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the Hulk – he’s definitely up there as one of the strongest heroes! But even he has his limits, and there are others in the MCU who could potentially take him on. It’s been wild seeing Bruce Banner’s journey on screen, from Edward Norton’s portrayal back in 2008 to Mark Ruffalo taking over in The Avengers, and then evolving into Professor Hulk in Endgame. Now, rumors are swirling that we might finally see the classic Savage Hulk again in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and it sounds like it might be another one of our favorite heroes who has to step up and contain him.
The Hulk is incredibly powerful in Marvel Comics, capable of amazing things. But we’re focusing on his appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for this list. Here are seven heroes who could potentially defeat the Hulk in the MCU.
7) The Thing

Okay, let’s talk about a potential showdown between The Thing and the Hulk. This one’s tricky, honestly. We haven’t seen a ton of The Thing on screen yet, but what we have seen suggests he’s a serious powerhouse in the MCU. Look, the Hulk is undeniably stronger, pure and simple. But here’s where The Thing could pull an upset: Ben Grimm is a strategist. He thinks in a fight. The Hulk, as we’ve seen in the MCU, mostly just…well, Hulks out – a lot of brute force. That mental edge, that ability to plan and fight technically, could actually give The Thing a real advantage.
6) Iron Man

Although many characters could likely win against Savage Hulk, Iron Man is the only one who’s actually done so in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Tony Stark fights a raging Hulk and, using his Hulkbuster armor, manages to defeat him. It took a lot of preparation and a plan developed with Bruce Banner, but it demonstrates that Iron Man’s armor is capable of withstanding Hulk’s attacks.
5) Thor

While Iron Man has defeated the Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor – who is much stronger – has only almost won a few times. Their first fight in The Avengers was chaotic, with Hulk overpowering Thor, but it didn’t have a definite outcome. The fight was interrupted when a jet started attacking Hulk, causing him to jump off the Helicarrier and pursue it.
In Thor: Ragnarok, Thor and Hulk fight again, and this time Thor is clearly the stronger fighter. He likely would have won if the Grandmaster hadn’t interfered. These battles demonstrate that Thor is capable of defeating Hulk by himself, as long as he understands his opponent.
4) Sentry

Currently, Sentry is by far the strongest hero from Earth within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As shown in Thunderbolts, he’s virtually indestructible, possessing incredible strength and the ability to fly, making him far more powerful than any other member of the team. He could likely defeat Hulk, and while the full extent of his power isn’t clear, his resilience is his greatest strength. Furthermore, if he transforms into The Void, he could incapacitate Hulk by trapping him in a terrifying illusion until he’s subdued.
3) Silver Surfer

Shalla-Bal first appears in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Initially a villain, she ultimately becomes a hero, even managing to push Galactus into a portal and send him away. Given her ability to defeat Galactus, she’d likely be more than capable of handling the Hulk. Shalla-Bal’s incredible speed and power to move through objects would make it nearly impossible for the Hulk to hit her, giving her the advantage she needs to easily win.
2) Doctor Strange

Everyone on this list is physically strong enough to defeat the Hulk. However, Doctor Strange would win easily by using magic. He could contain the Hulk in other dimensions, exhaust him with magical creatures, or teleport him far away. The Hulk would be helpless against Strange’s powerful and skillful magic.
1) Scarlet Witch

When it comes to defeating the Hulk, Scarlet Witch is likely the most capable hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her ability to manipulate reality gives her countless ways to stop him. We’ve already seen in Age of Ultron that Wanda can enter the Hulk’s mind and, instead of enraging him, she could potentially calm him down. He wouldn’t even be able to touch her. Furthermore, she managed to fight Thanos to a standstill, and Thanos easily defeated the Hulk at the start of Avengers: Infinity War.
