When Maitreyi Ramakrishnan said goodbye to Devi Vishwakumar, she meant it.
Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, the star of Never Have I Ever, chose to end her character’s story after the show’s fourth and final season. Her character was dealing with the challenges of high school and grieving the loss of her father, Mohan Vishwakumar, played by Sendhil Ramamurthy.
In an interview with TopMob News, Maitreyi jokingly said she believes her character, Devi, would meet an unfortunate end. She explained that, in her view of the story, Devi would die in a ditch, mirroring the fate of her father.
I’ve been getting a lot of questions about why the actress is so protective of Devi’s journey now that she’s started fresh at Princeton. It really comes down to wanting the best for her character, and ensuring that next phase of her life feels authentic and true to everything we’ve built. It’s about safeguarding that story, you know?
I often tell fans who keep asking about season five that it doesn’t make sense for the story to continue. I say this hoping they’ll accept that and move on.
“Let’s grieve our girl and let her go,” she continued. “It’s OK. She’s on her next reincarnation.”
Maitreyi is open to returning for a fifth season of the Mindy Kaling series, if it’s discussed.
Okay, so she said it like it was nothing, but honestly, it sent shivers down my spine! She joked about ending up alone in a ditch, but then… then she said it would be season five, edited by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan! Maitreyi! Can you even imagine?! She’s actually going to pitch it to Netflix! I’m already counting down the days, seriously. This is it, guys, this is the season. I just know it’s going to be amazing!
The actress from Slanted also revealed some disappointing news about Devi and Ben Gross (Jaren Lewison). She stated plainly, “They’ve definitely broken up. It wasn’t going to work out, and we all knew it.”

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan has finished portraying a high school student in Never Have I Ever, but she’s returning to the role in her new film, Slanted. In the movie, she plays Bhindra, the close friend of Joan Huang (Shirley Chen), a Chinese American student who makes the drastic decision to undergo a procedure to appear white, all in an attempt to win prom queen (played by McKenna Grace).
Maitreyi initially had reservations about the movie, feeling it was quite controversial and a bold move. She explained that the film involved replacing an actress of East Asian descent with a white actress, and that the original character was never seen again after the change.
Despite her initial hesitation, she was eventually persuaded after speaking with Amy Wang, the film’s writer and director. Wang’s personal experiences as an Asian Australian were the inspiration for the movie.

I’ve always been drawn to movies that push boundaries and spark debate,” the actor shared. “Those are the films that lead to the most interesting discussions and truly memorable cinematic moments. The thought of being part of something controversial that also encourages thoughtful conversation really appealed to me.
Following cosmetic surgery at the Ethnos clinic – a place known for altering people’s appearances to seem white – Joan reinvents herself as Jo Hunt, a blonde, blue-eyed woman originally from Los Angeles. This transformation significantly strains her friendship with Bhindra as Jo begins to gain social prominence.

Maitreyi was happy to be in the disturbing and graphic film Slanted, which is similar to other body horror projects like The Substance and The Beauty.
She expressed her excitement about the current surge of creative films. She sees this moment as a great opportunity to tell important stories in engaging ways, and appreciates how the mix of genres—like horror, comedy, and satire—allows filmmakers to tackle serious themes with a unique approach.
As you anticipate the release of Slanted in theaters on March 13th, here’s a look at other movies coming soon.
