When it comes to TV shows based on comic books, Smallville is arguably the most well-known. The show, a teen drama about a young Clark Kent discovering his powers, first aired on The WB in 2001 and ran for ten seasons. It followed Clark’s life in Smallville, Kansas, before he became Superman. Starring Tom Welling as Clark, the series also featured Kristin Kreuk as the beloved Lana Lang. Though Smallville concluded 15 years ago, Kreuk is returning to the comic book world – this time as a writer.
Titan Comics will release a new gothic horror comic series called Black Star on July 29th. The five-issue series is created by Kreuk, actor Peter Mooney, and screenwriter Eric Putzer, with artwork by Joe Bocardo (known for Nightwalkers and The Hexiles). Described as a blend of The Revenant and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I, Black Star is set in the early 1800s during the fur trade era. It follows Dashiell Carlyle, who learns he possesses magical powers and isn’t the only one. He’s drawn into a secret society dedicated to using magic to build a better world, but soon realizes this dream may come at a terrible price.
Black Star Will Be Worlds Away From Smallville (And Inspired By Canadian Lore)

Even from the initial description, Black Star promises to be a departure from shows like Smallville or typical superhero series, though that likely won’t surprise fans of actress Kristin Kreuk. Kreuk has intentionally moved away from superhero roles in recent years, taking leading parts in shows like Beauty & the Beast on The CW and the CBC legal drama Burden of Truth, where she co-starred with Antony Mooney. In fact, it was her work on Burden of Truth that sparked the idea for Black Star.

While filming ‘Burden of Truth’ in Winnipeg, Peter, Eric, and I started working on ‘Black Star,'” Kreuk explained. “We were fascinated by the city’s stories and, enjoying working together, we spent our free time creating our own version of its hidden history and magic – a world of secret battles and rhythms beneath the surface.”
Will There Be a Smallville Reboot?
As a longtime fan of Smallville, I was definitely intrigued by the news of a return to that universe with Black Star. But like many, I keep hoping for a proper Smallville reboot. Sadly, it doesn’t seem likely. Last summer, Michael Rosenbaum – who brilliantly played Lex Luthor – and Tom Welling chatted on Rosenbaum’s podcast, Inside of You, and pretty much confirmed that another installment of Smallville, whether an episode or a movie, is “probably never going to happen.” And unfortunately, even animated sequel plans haven’t gained any traction. It’s a tough pill to swallow for those of us who loved the original series, but it looks like we’ll have to be content with the memories.
Black Star goes on sale from Titan Comics on June 26th.
