A fantastic, but often overlooked, modern horror film is available on Paramount+, and exciting news about its sequel has just been released. Creature features – movies focused on terrifying monsters – have been a horror staple since the beginning of cinema. From classic characters like Dracula and Frankenstein to colossal creatures like King Kong and Godzilla, these films have captivated and frightened viewers for generations, and the genre is now revisiting a particularly strong, yet underappreciated, entry.
The 2019 horror film Crawl, directed by Alexandre Aja, follows a father and daughter battling alligators and rising floodwaters during a powerful hurricane. Produced in part by Sam Raimi, it became available on Paramount+ on March 1st. Despite being overlooked by many, Crawl is getting a sequel, officially titled Crawl 2, which is currently in development at Paramount Pictures. Raimi recently shared an update with The Wrap in February, stating that after a period of uncertainty following the Paramount-Skydance merger, he’s optimistic about moving forward with the sequel, which will be set in New York City.
Sam Raimi’s Crawl Is an Intense, Claustrophobic Survival Story
If you enjoy thrilling, suspenseful monster movies, you won’t be let down by Crawl. It’s a gripping survival story that throws you into a desperate battle against nature, combining the scares of a creature feature with the intensity of a natural disaster. The film keeps you on the edge of your seat with constant threats – rising floodwaters and relentless alligators – all within the confined space of a house. With plenty of action, brutal creature attacks, a fast-paced plot that doesn’t waste time, and a compelling performance from Kaya Scodelario, Crawl is a must-see and a film you’ll want to watch again.
I honestly think Crawl is one of the most overlooked monster movies out there, but it did get some fantastic reviews! It’s ‘Certified Fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes with an 84% score from critics, which is amazing. It even lands at number 11 on a ranking of Sam Raimi’s best-reviewed films – or number 6 if you count films with the same score. Audiences clearly loved it too, giving it a 75% rating. I think people really appreciate how straightforward and effective it is as a creature feature, and thankfully, it’s earned a dedicated fanbase and a sequel – though we don’t know much about that yet!
What’s New on Paramount+?
Paramount+ has added a lot of new movies this March, and Crawl is just one of them. You can now stream eight Friday the 13th films, Good Will Hunting, both versions of Pet Sematary (from 1989 and 2019), the first three Spy Kids movies, and the horror film The Ruins, plus many more titles.
