A new documentary series is coming to Channel 5, following actors Samuel West and Adrian Edmondson as they travel around Britain each weekend to observe and appreciate its diverse birdlife.
Sam & Ade Go Birding is a new show featuring Samuel, known from ‘All Creatures Great & Small,’ and Adrian, from ‘A Spy Among Friends,’ as they embark on a birdwatching adventure throughout the British Isles.
West has been a dedicated birdwatcher for two decades, identifying over 400 species in Britain and constantly hoping to spot more. Edmondson, on the other hand, is simply interested in learning about birds.
Although Ade has lived in the countryside for over twenty years, he’s always wished he knew more about the local birds. He’s now eager to learn, and his friend is happy to join him – as long as they can enjoy good food, comfortable lodging, and the occasional pub visit during their birdwatching adventures.

Samuel West believes birdwatching is a wonderfully simple hobby. It’s a great way to feel more connected to nature, and all it takes is a willingness to observe and appreciate the world around you. While binoculars can be helpful, sharing the experience with a friend – especially a fun one like Adrian Edmondson – makes it even more enjoyable.
We’re so excited to bring five audience members along with us on our adventures! Their excellent taste – proven by their love of ‘All Creatures Great and Small‘ – makes us confident they’ll appreciate the beauty of truly paying attention to the world around us. Welcome to the wonderful practice of mindful observation.
Over three weekend trips, West and Edmondson will be birdwatching in West Cornwall, hoping to spot choughs, wading birds, and birds blown off course from across the Atlantic. They’ll then head to North Norfolk to search for brent and pink-footed geese, and finally to the Somerset Levels, where they plan to observe kingfishers, egrets, and the rare bittern.
Honestly, this series is stunning to look at – the photography and landscapes are just incredible. But it’s not just pretty pictures; it’s a really lovely story about the friendship between Sam and Ade. They spend a lot of time chatting between filming, and their conversations are surprisingly deep. They talk about everything – from their passions and getting older, to acting, childhood, losing a parent, and all the nerdy stuff they love. It’s really relatable and moving, not just a wildlife show.
Kit Morey from 5 said that “Sam & Ade Go Birding” is a truly joyful show. He highlighted how the series not only celebrates the beauty of British birds, but also the wonderful friendship between Sam and Ade, reminding viewers that happiness can often be found in life’s simplest pleasures.
Frank Films has made something really special, and we hope viewers will appreciate this calm, funny, and uplifting escape, especially when things feel stressful right now.
