Exciting Star Trek Spinoff Takes Major Step Forward

Rumors suggest another Star Trek series is in development. Currently, two shows are airing: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which features Captain Christopher Pike and his crew, and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which follows the adventures of students training to explore space. While the future of Starfleet Academy is uncertain, Strange New Worlds has two seasons already completed and ready to air. Now, discussions are beginning about a potential new installment in the Star Trek universe.

TrekMovie reports that the next Star Trek series will be called Star Trek: Year One, continuing the story right after the events of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. At the Saturn Awards, Strange New Worlds co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers expressed his enthusiasm for the project, calling it a natural progression of their storyline. However, he also clarified that the decision to move forward with the series isn’t up to him.

A Star Trek: Year One Spin-Off Has Been Pitched

Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers are the executive producers of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. They originally conceived of the show as Star Trek: Year One, which would have focused on the early adventures of the Starship Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk. Henry Myers explained that they presented the concept, along with detailed ideas, to Paramount/Skydance last year, and now the decision of whether to move forward with the series rests with the network.

The new series will continue the story from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The final episode of Strange New Worlds will show Captain Pike leaving and Captain Kirk taking command for the very first time – even earlier in his career than we’ve seen before in the original series’ “Where No Man Has Gone Before.” Paul Wesley will reprise his role as Kirk in the new series, along with Ethan Peck as Spock, Jess Bush as Christine Chapel, Martin Quinn as Scotty, and Celia Rose Gooding as Uhura.

The finale of Strange New Worlds will likely feature Thomas Jane as Dr. McCoy and Kai Murakami as Hikaru Sulu. Good news for fans hoping for a continuation of the Star Trek universe: the sets used for Strange New Worlds haven’t been taken down, unlike those from Star Trek: Picard. This means Paramount could potentially save money on a new spinoff series, possibly Star Trek: Legacy, by reusing them.

Currently, no new Star Trek shows are being actively made. While Star Trek: Starfleet Academy recently finished its second season, it’s unclear if there will be a third. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has completed filming its final season and is being edited, but Star Trek: Year One hasn’t been officially approved. This leaves Star Trek fans in a waiting period as Paramount decides what’s next for the series.
