HBO Max is adding more titles to its streaming library this March, including a truly unusual film. Over the last 26 years, a number of experimental and genre-bending movies like The Lobster and Titane have pushed the boundaries of cinema. A standout from 2016, known for its strangeness, is now available to watch on HBO Max.
Looking for a truly strange and unforgettable movie experience? Check out Swiss Army Man. This 2016 film, now available on HBO Max, is a surreal comedy-drama about Hank (Paul Dano), a man stranded on a deserted island who forms an unlikely friendship with a corpse named Manny (Daniel Radcliffe). Manny has some surprising and useful abilities, and together, they set off on a wild journey to get back to society. Directed by Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan, in their first feature films, Swiss Army Man also features Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
Swiss Army Man Needs To Be Seen To Be Believed
Swiss Army Man is a truly unique film – you’ll either love it or be completely baffled. It’s a strange and often shocking movie that’s surprisingly emotional. The film embraces its bizarre premise and the many unusual talents of its main character, including, yes, using flatulence for transportation and shooting objects from his mouth. However, beneath all the absurdity and gross-out humor, it’s a touching story about loneliness, learning to accept yourself, and the importance of human connection. The movie constantly plays with what’s real and what’s imagined, leaving you wondering if the entire story is a hallucination stemming from the main character’s isolation and mental state, or a genuinely strange adventure.
The movie’s unusual story initially split audiences, but it’s gained a dedicated fanbase over the past ten years, and there’s a lot to enjoy. Beyond its unique and strangely beautiful narrative, the film boasts stunning visuals that transform the natural landscape into a dreamlike world, complemented by a captivating a cappella soundtrack. Daniel Dano and Daniel Radcliffe both give excellent performances. Currently, the film has a 73% approval rating from critics and a 72% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

They’ve also launched the first seasons of new original series DTF St. Louis and Rooster.
