Call the Midwife writer teases “more contemporary” project after show ends

Heidi Thomas has been deeply involved with Call the Midwife since its 2012 debut on the BBC, and even earlier when she started reading the memoirs of nurse Jennifer Worth, which inspired the show. It’s been a major focus of her work ever since, aside from a few other projects.

Though a prequel and another movie are planned, and a 16th season is expected eventually, the series is nearing its conclusion as the world of Poplar evolves.

So naturally, Thomas has allowed her mind to meander elsewhere.

She mentioned at the TopMob Covers Party 2026 that she’s planning a new, more modern project later in the year. Right now, she’s focused on the Call the Midwife prequel and a related film, but she’s looking forward to working on something different as well.

Thomas shared that she loves bringing history to life through storytelling. She jokingly noted that the most recent season of Call the Midwife takes place in the 1970s, a decade she actually remembers.

It’s sad to realize this is now part of the past,” she said. “But researching 1939 for the new prequel, which is set during the Blitz, has been very insightful. It’s made me reflect a lot on what my mother and grandmother went through as a child and young mother during that time.

“So deeply thought provoking and very energising, very energising for me, definitely.”

I’m really excited for the prequel – it’s coming as a three-part mini-series around Christmas, though the BBC hasn’t officially announced the date just yet.

The show will feature flashbacks to earlier years with younger versions of the beloved characters Sister Julienne, Sister Evangelina, and Sister Monica Joan, who passed away in the last episode of season fifteen. Alongside them, we’ll meet three new midwives who are fresh to the East End and quickly face challenging situations.

What’s fascinating to me is the dynamic where, during wartime, leadership quickly shifts to women. While men are sent to fight or support the war effort domestically, women step up and take control of everything.

The show will focus on women discovering their power and becoming confident individuals. It’s all about celebrating strong women and their journeys.

Call the Midwife seasons 1-15 are available to stream now on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
