5 finally confirms air date of its Huw Edwards drama starring Doc Martin icon with all-new first-look images

Channel 5 has announced the premiere date for the new Martin Clunes documentary series detailing the controversy involving BBC newsreader Huw Edwards, and has also released some first-look photos.

The documentary ‘Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards’, directed by award-winning filmmaker Michael Samuels and written by Mark Burt (known for ‘The Trial’), will premiere on Channel 5 on Tuesday, March 24th at 9 PM.

The two-part drama stars the actor known for Doc Martin as Edwards, portraying the unraveling of the newsreader’s secret life. It depicts how his actions lead to his conviction for serious crimes and his eventual disappearance from public view, as described in the show’s summary.

The series promises a detailed and sensitive look at the case, drawing on a year of in-depth research. This includes interviews with people directly involved and full access to The Sun newspaper’s prize-winning reporting on the scandal.

Recently released photos from the show feature Martin Clunes as Harold Edwards, alongside actors Osian Morgan, Ben Bishop, and Clare Calbraith, who portray Sun journalists Ben O’Driscoll and Victoria Newton.

For many years, Edwards was a well-known journalist and the main presenter of BBC’s News at Ten. He led the coverage of significant national moments, such as the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

In 2024, Edwards admitted to creating indecent images of children and received a six-month suspended sentence, meaning he wouldn’t serve time in jail unless he committed another crime.

The drama is the first collaboration between 5’s factual and scripted commissioning teams.

The series was first announced in January. When it was revealed, Ben Frow, the head of content at Channel 5, described it as a significant and disturbing story about a powerful person who abused their position of trust.

We spoke directly with the people at the heart of the story – both those involved and the investigators – to reveal the real impact it had on their lives.

Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards will air on Tuesday 24 March at 9pm on 5.
