The film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s “Reminders of Him,” directed by Vanessa Caswill, delivers exactly what fans anticipate from her stories. It features strong performances, a heartwarming (though sometimes overly sentimental) plot, and all the familiar elements that define the growing world of Colleen Hoover adaptations.
Normally known for horror roles filled with screams and suspense, Maika Monroe delivers a more subdued performance in Reminders of Him. She plays Kenna Rowan, a woman recently released from prison after a terrible accident involving her boyfriend, Scotty (Rudy Pankow). She’s back home hoping to rebuild her life and connect with the daughter she’s mostly been separated from.
The story’s setting is intentionally vague, but clues – like the country music soundtrack – suggest it takes place in a small town in the American South. This is further emphasized by Lainey Wilson, a country artist known for her role in Yellowstone, who makes a delightful appearance as Kenna’s friend, Amy. She even contributes vocals to a song that hints at the story’s central theme, ‘Heart Like a Truck’.
The strongest part of the movie is definitely the cast, especially Monroe. She’s perfectly suited for the role of Kenna, and skillfully uses her experience in horror films to bring both suspense and empathy to the character. Without her, the role wouldn’t have had the same impact. Monroe has always been captivating on screen, and she manages to lift the film above its occasionally low-budget feel with her natural charm.

Withers plays Ledger, the charming but flawed bar owner who captures Kenna’s attention. Though he’s known for his lead role in the 2025 film Him, Withers feels at home in this role, hinting at a potential romantic future. He and Monroe share a believable connection, making their quirky and slightly off-limits relationship engaging to watch.
Lauren Graham and Bradley Whitford, both well-known and talented actors, deliver strong performances in supporting roles. Newcomer Zoe Kosovic also stands out as Diem, avoiding typical child actor tropes and bringing genuine warmth to her scenes. The cast’s overall quality helps elevate a script that is sometimes a bit simple and occasionally feels awkward.
The story is genuinely captivating. A heartfelt story about a mother trying to reconnect with her child is naturally touching. While “Reminders of Him” follows a predictable path, it still keeps you curious and wanting to know how things will resolve – and whether Kenna will finally be reunited with her daughter.
The film has a simple but appealing visual style, with warm colors and cozy scenes of southern sunsets – including a memorable orange truck, as one of the filmmakers described it. While not particularly groundbreaking, the visuals fit well with the overall feel of the movie.
The movie ‘Reminders of Him’ stays pretty true to the book it’s based on. While a few changes to the romance between Kenna and Ledger don’t quite work, the film avoids some of the book’s more awkward parts – like the strange reason behind the daughter’s name, Diem. Overall, people who loved the book will likely be satisfied with how it’s been adapted.
Reminders of Him doesn’t break new ground in the romance genre, but it delivers a sweet and enjoyable experience, especially for fans of author Colleen Hoover. The film offers 114 minutes of heartwarming, if predictable, storytelling, balancing familiar tropes with a touching story about family, forgiveness, and love. It’s an easy, feel-good movie that’s likely to be a commercial success, much like other works by the author.
