Although critics have been very positive about SEGA’s recent games, the company reports that this hasn’t led to a boost in sales numbers.
This comes from a recent Q&A all about the company’s Q3 financial results.
When asked about increasing the popularity of their games, SEGA and Atlus admitted that critical praise doesn’t always translate to strong sales. They plan to focus on improving other aspects of how they market and release games.
Although our games cost less to develop than top-tier, or ‘AAA,’ titles, we’re known for consistently delivering high-quality experiences. However, that strong reputation hasn’t yet led to significantly higher sales numbers. We’re continuing to improve our game development skills, which are our core strength, but we also see a big opportunity to boost sales through better marketing and sales strategies. We’re currently making changes in these areas to achieve that growth.
SEGA believes the issue isn’t with the quality of their games, but rather a need to improve how they market and sell them.
SEGA has brought a number of popular games to the PS5, including titles like Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Two Point Museum, Sonic X Shadow Generations, and the critically acclaimed Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, among others.
On top of that are Atlus games like Persona 5 Royal, Persona 3 Reload, and Metaphor: ReFantazio.
These games have generally been praised by critics and players alike, but strong sales haven’t always followed. It’s clear that simply creating a good game isn’t enough – SEGA also needs to improve its marketing to reach a wider audience.
The publisher acknowledges it needs to improve in areas like online sales and using data to inform its marketing strategies. To address this, they plan to restructure how publishing operations are organized to create a more unified global marketing approach.
The company has several projects in development, including bringing back popular franchises like Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio.
Sega has a strong future with popular franchises like Sonic, Persona, and Like a Dragon. Now, they need to focus on better marketing to ensure these games reach their full potential.
