Xbox has announced that developers will start receiving development kits for its next gaming console, currently known as Project Helix, beginning in 2027.
This means developers, both large and small, won’t have access to the physical hardware until at least 2027. Plus, Xbox is currently sharing early, alpha versions of the development kit, meaning it might not reflect the final version of the console that games will be built for.
This announcement makes it seem even less likely that Project Helix and the PS6 will be released in 2027.
People have been talking about this for months, and the latest version of the story surfaced just last week.
Tech analyst Moore’s Law Is Dead continues to predict that Sony will release the PlayStation 6 in late 2027, even after the announcement of Project Helix.
This contradicted an earlier report about Sony’s financial predictions, which indicated they intended to continue supporting the PlayStation 5 for longer than originally expected.
A recent Bloomberg report supports this idea, suggesting Sony is thinking about postponing the launch because of issues with chip availability and the cost of RAM. The potential launch years discussed were 2028 and 2029.
Xbox’s plan to release development kits in 2027 suggests the current generation of consoles might last longer than expected.
However, reliable PlayStation leaker KelperL2 claims that Sony and Microsoft are both still planning to release the PS5’s successor and the next Xbox – currently known as Project Helix – around the 2027 holiday season.
There’s a lot of conflicting information out there at the moment. Also, just because Xbox is sending out development kits in 2027 doesn’t necessarily mean the console won’t launch that same year. Xbox’s game developers will probably get to start working with the new hardware well before then.
Many PS5 owners aren’t convinced the PS6 should come out in 2027. Most of our audience actually prefers waiting until 2028 or later.
