Valve isn’t setting a high bar for games on the new Steam Machine. They’ve revealed the basic requirements for a title to be included, and surprisingly, they’re quite reasonable.
To be officially supported on the Steam Machine (and Steam Deck), games need to run at a resolution of 1080p and a frame rate of 30 frames per second. Valve announced this at GDC 2026. While the new Steam Machine is capable of higher settings, this is the minimum requirement for game verification.
The Steam Deck requires a bit more processing power when running games directly on its internal hardware, needing around 90 frames per second for virtual reality games. Simpler 2D games only need 30 frames per second at 720p resolution. Valve also encouraged developers to include features like offline play, optimization for less powerful computers, and better controller compatibility when releasing games for SteamOS.
We’re excited about the new Steam Machine and Steam Frame, and we believe many others are too. We’re eager to see how Valve challenges PlayStation and Xbox in the gaming market.
