I just saw the first trailer for the new DCU series, Lanterns, and honestly, the reaction seems pretty split. It’s not about the actors or even making a Green Lantern show – it’s how they’re approaching it. The creators have said they’re aiming for a *True Detectivestyle detective story, and that’s not what most of us were hoping for. I, for one, was really looking forward to seeing Hal Jordan and John Stewart soaring around, building massive green constructs with their power rings, and wearing costumes that were, you know, a lot more vibrant and green! It just feels…different than what people expected.
The new film, Lanterns, is vastly different from the Green Lantern movie, and that’s a good thing. Hopefully, that difference will ease any worries and build anticipation. Ultimately, both stories aim to do the same thing.
5) The DCU Has Been Solid So Far

Critics and DC fans have consistently praised the first three installments of the new DC Universe: Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker Season 2. While Man of Steel was the most popular earlier film, it still sparked debate among audiences, unlike the near-universal approval of these recent releases.
Let’s trust that James Gunn and Peter Safran have a clear vision for the DC Universe. Even though we’ve only seen a few projects so far, it’s clear they’re willing to take risks and create high-quality stories that don’t follow typical formulas or always give audiences what they expect.
4) Damon Lindelof’s Track Record

Damon Lindelof consistently surprises viewers with unexpected twists. His take on Watchmen, for example, significantly departed from the original comic and the previous film adaptation, but it was still a success.
Damon Lindelof is a creator of the new series Lanterns, working with Chris Mundy and Tom King (writer of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow). It’s likely this show will be as well-received as his previous hits like Lost, The Leftovers, and Mrs. Davis. Just like Lost – which surprised everyone with its unexpected twists – Lanterns has the potential to gain a large and dedicated following.
3) Its Fantastic Cast

Kyle Chandler is incredibly charismatic and watchable, even in less-than-ideal roles – he always brings his best. His casting as an older, more experienced Hal Jordan seems perfect; he’ll clearly enjoy the part, and that enjoyment will be contagious for the audience.
Aaron Pierre, who gave a fantastic performance in Netflix’s Rebel Ridge, is poised to be equally impressive as John Stewart in Lanterns. He’s a rising star, and this role should definitely get him noticed. Plus, the acclaimed Kelly Macdonald, known for her work in Brave and No Country for Old Men, has a significant part. Her involvement alone is a good sign for the show. Lanterns clearly focused on casting versatile and talented actors.
2) The Directors

The series Lanterns will have eight episodes, directed by four different directors who will each handle two episodes. All of these directors have a proven track record of success with popular TV shows.
Stephen Williams has directed episodes of popular shows like Fallout, The Last of Us, and Watchmen, as well as the film Chevalier. Alik Sakharov has a strong background in prestige television, having worked on Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Marco Polo, House of Cards, and Ozark. Geeta Vasant Patel’s directing work on House of the Dragon, The Great, and Ahsoka has been highly acclaimed. James Hawes, known for Slow Horses and Black Mirror, is back to directing for television after helming the films One Life and The Amateur. Each of these directors has a proven track record of successful projects, so it’s reasonable to expect their new series, Lanterns, will follow suit.
1) The Detective Show Approach

What makes Lanterns so compelling – and surprisingly divisive – is that it’s a gritty small-town crime drama, much like True Detective. This is a refreshing change of pace, especially considering what people expect from a Green Lantern series.
The 2011 movie proved that a bit of playful absurdity and loose adaptation can actually work. As long as this series maintains a captivating central mystery and the actors have good on-screen chemistry, it’s sure to be enjoyable. Let’s stay optimistic about it.
