Caution: spoilers ahead for One Piece season 2 and the manga series.
The new live-action Netflix series One Piece explains that Monkey D. Luffy gained his rubbery abilities by eating the Gum Gum Fruit. However, that’s not entirely accurate.
In the world of One Piece, Devil Fruits come in three main types. Logia fruits let users transform their bodies into elements, like Captain Smoker. Paramecia fruits give users special physical abilities, such as Nico Robin’s ability to sprout extra limbs. And Zoan fruits allow for complete transformations into animals or animal-human hybrids, a power seen in both Chopper and Dalton.
Luffy’s Devil Fruit power, initially thought to be a simple rubber ability, is actually a more powerful Zoan-type fruit called the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika. Later in the story, it’s revealed that Nika was a legendary sun god with a rubber-like body, and Luffy’s fruit transforms him into this god. As Luffy masters his powers, he increasingly embodies the traits and abilities of Nika.
As a big fan of the live-action One Piece on Netflix, I’ve been trying to figure out the mystery around Luffy’s background! The World Government is keeping everything super secret, but season 2 actually gave us three really interesting hints that seem to be pointing us towards the truth. I’m so excited to see where it all leads!
Luffy Does The Nika Pose While Singing To Laboon
Luffy figures out that singing to Laboon will be more effective than fighting, so he starts performing “Binks’ Brew” and even breaks into a little dance.
Nika is a cheerful and musical god in the world of One Piece, famous for a distinctive pose. This pose, resembling a person running with arms and legs bent at sharp angles, is seen when Iñaki Godoy, who plays Luffy, performs for Laboon in season 2 of the show.
Throughout the One Piece series, a specific pose appears repeatedly, often during joyful moments. Many characters recognize it, even if they don’t know its origin. Luffy is one of these characters – he’s seen the pose enough to incorporate it into his dancing, but he doesn’t understand what it means.
The Giants On Little Garden Reference Nika The Sun God
The story of Nika appears in the traditions of nearly every island in the world of One Piece, though the details vary. Some people see Nika as a hero who helps those who are suffering, while others see him as a frightening force of destruction. However, the giants have the strongest connection to Nika, and he’s a central figure in their religion.
In season 2 of One Piece, a moment with the giants hints at the mystery of Nika – they mention Nika looking down on them. The Straw Hat crew doesn’t understand the significance, and what they don’t realize is that the actual spirit of Nika is with them all along.
The Netflix live-action series mentions Nika much earlier than the original One Piece anime did – it took over 1000 chapters for the sun god’s name to appear in the manga. However, considering the creator, Eiichiro Oda, has since revealed a stronger connection between Nika and the giants, it logically follows that Dorry and Brogy would worship this rubber-like figure in the show’s second season.
Dorry Has A Nika Statue On Little Garden
Dorry has been stranded on the same island for a century, and to pass the time, he carves wooden figures. He’s made a sculpture of Loki, a giant from Elbaph, and hidden behind it is a smaller carving that looks like Nika.
It’s hard to say for sure, as Nika has only briefly appeared as a silhouette in the One Piece manga. However, the statue shares several traits with Nika – it has the same fluffy, cloud-like hair, a cheerful look, and a general resemblance to Luffy when he’s in Gear 5, which is when he fully becomes Nika’s embodiment.
Knowing that Dorry and Brogy deeply worship Nika, the sun god of Elbaph, it makes sense that Dorry would build a statue of him. This would help Dorry feel more comfortable and at home while spending a century on Little Garden.
The Netflix live-action One Piece series is playfully hinting at future storylines, like the reveal of Nika, even though it might be a while before – or if ever – the show actually gets to that point.
