The Alien franchise has seen a major resurgence in recent years. Starting in 2024, a new Alien movie, Alien: Romulus, was released to positive reception, quickly followed by a TV show, Alien: Earth, and a series of Alienthemed Marvel comics – some set within the Alien universe and others that connect it to the broader Marvel Universe. Now, with the initial success under its belt, the franchise is gearing up for more, including a sequel to Alien: Romulus. However, finding a director for the sequel has proven difficult. While Fede Álvarez, who directed Romulus*, is writing the script, he won’t be directing the follow-up. The search for a new director faced some obstacles, but it seems like those are now being overcome and production is moving forward.
There were reports that Demián Rugna, director of When Evil Lurks, was a potential candidate to direct the Alien: Romulus sequel, but that turned out to be more of a hope than a firm plan from Fede Álvarez. Now, sources say another director is being considered for the job.
A Quiet Place Prequel Director Being Eyed For Alien: Romulus Sequel

Michael Sarnoski is a leading candidate to direct the next Alien movie, according to Nexus Point News. While details are still scarce, the film will continue the story of Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and her android companion, Andy (David Jonsson), who survived a dangerous mission to the Weyland-Yutani research station, Renaissance. They managed to escape with a ship full of cryostasis tubes, hoping to reach the colony world of Yvaga III. Director Fede Álvarez has assured fans that Rain and Andy won’t be quickly killed off—a common trope in Alien movies—meaning their journey to Yvaga III will likely face unexpected dangers, or they’ll arrive on the seemingly perfect planet… only to find it’s already infested with the terrifying facehuggers.
Director Michael Sarnoski has quickly become known for skillfully blending horror, suspense, and emotional character studies. He first gained attention from film enthusiasts with his 2021 film Pig, starring Nicolas Cage. In 2024, Sarnoski transitioned to large-scale horror with A Quiet Place: Day One, a prequel to the popular A Quiet Place series. This film takes viewers back to the beginning of the alien invasion, set amidst the chaos of New York City. While offering some of the most visually impressive moments in the series, it also remains focused on a moving, personal story about a woman facing a terminal illness (played by Lupita Nyong’o) who finds renewed hope in the face of the apocalypse.
Despite being the lowest-grossing film in the A Quiet Place series relative to its budget, A Quiet Place: Day One still earned a solid $262 million on a $67 million budget – comparable to the $297 million earned by A Quiet Place Part II (budget: $61 million). Day One also had the strongest opening weekend of any film in the series, a testament to director Michael Sarnoski’s skill. Sarnoski has said James Cameron’s Aliens was a major influence, suggesting he, like director Fede Álvarez, truly understands and appreciates the Alien franchise. This approach clearly worked for Alien: Romulus, which successfully introduced a new generation to the classic Alien experience, and it could certainly pave the way for future collaborations with Sarnoski.
Alien: Romulus‘s sequel is currently in development. No release date has been set.
